Classic & Vintage - 1984 Murray track bike?

So I was looking at the indy co-op, and under "fixies" they have a stash of 1984 Murray track bikes that were apparently used at the Maj. Taylor velodrome to practice for the '84 olympics...Could this be true, and if so, what is the history behind this?

Also, they're selling complete 1984 bikes for $250 - decent price?

Not that I am in the market, but would be interested in at least seeing one if they are in fact what the story is you mentioned above. What is the link to the post you found it in? Sorry, I'm lazy. :)

Bike pictured is not a true track bike - dropouts are wrong.

Yeah, now I know what I'm going to spend the next couple months saving for. Hopefully the "murray" name and the fact that it's "really freakin' old" will help keep people from actually buying the two larger sizes until March-ish.

As an aside, some of the road bikes they have on there are pretty cool as well.

I'm just amazed that Murray had lugs...

As cool as they are though, I think I'll pass. For $100 or even $150, sure. But for only 100 more than the asking price, I can get a damned nice newer ss/fg bike, or build my own. Especially since I'm planning on having a bunch of signatures put on it. I don't think I'd want to mess with these like that because, even if they are teh "smelly brown shoes" of the track, they're cool "smelly brown shoes."

Perhaps I'll take a drive to bloomington and see what their bike coop is like.

Well, there was a period back then when some of these manufacturers were getting good custom bikes made for race teams and putting their names on them. Heck, Andy Hampsten won the 88 Giro on a "Huffy".

Those aren't them, however!

You have to remember, however, that back then lugs were nothing special. That was the standard way to build a bike. True, most Murrays were just welded up pipe but anything at all decent was lugged.

Still an interesting bike for a casual 80's collector like me. Actually, not really collector, more of a curious enthusiast! :) Agreed though, I will probably just put the money towards my TX900 instead, especially since I am in PA.

Tom Kellogg built the team bikes for Huffy. If these are team bikes, chances are they're Kellogg's work and a steal at $250 -- even for a bare frame!

Looks to me like those are veledrome rentals that someone is trying to pawn off as something they are not. Any frame with double fender eyelets is NOT a high preformance bike and using a road bike on the track is well, no team is going to train on that garbage, no matter how hard up they are.

Looking at thepicturesintheother thread,these definitely are NOT the custom frames I had in mind. Low end production frames; nothing more.

Cheap fixie conversions. I'll bet they have suicide rear hubs.

They only way those bikes were ever near the LA olympics was if a spectator rode one. No Olypic track rider would use one either, that co-op is flat out lying about these.

I say that during NAHBS, a bunch of us break in and assault them with big wrenches while shouting "Major Taylor lives!"

If it isn't a track frame, it isn't a track bike. Conversion fixie, yes. Track bike, no.

The only thing worse then a bike shop full of * is a co-op full of *.
