well, better as in "will perform the duties of a bicycle better longer." or "better" as in "will cost you a crapload of money."?

a nice combination of the two for me would be the following:

harry havnoonian custom 853 track frame + fork
high flange phil woods on open pros*
sugino75 crank*
46T sugino cubic chainring
sugino75 superlap bottom bracket
EAI 18T cog
izumi eco chain*
cinelli track drops* + soyo keirin grips*
cinelli stem
american classic headset
panaracer whateverthehelltireisontherearwheelofmypursuitbikerightnow*
MKS sylvan track pedals + two sets of EAI straps or time atac carbons*
suntour superbe seat post or american classic*
selle italia slr
slayer sticker for top tube
skull and crossbones sticker for seat tube

a less expensive version with the same frame would be:
surly hubs + ma3s or cxp21s
sugino75 cranks w/stock 49T ring*
shimano UN52 bottom bracket*
surly 18T cog
KMC 410H chain*
steel riser bars + solid BMX grip reapers*
nitto pearl stem
tange headset*
panaracer tires*
bargain bin metal platforms + clips and two sets of cristophe nylon straps*
whatever random seatpost i have lying around*
some bargain bin seat that was swapped out from another bike (every shop has used seats...EVERY shop)*
slayer sticker for top tube
skull and crossbones sticker for seat tube.

* = crap i already have.

well, if it's strength and durability ye be wantin', it's phil woods instead of suzue hubs you'll be needin'. or at the very least, surly hubs. the suzue sealed hubs don't have a very good rep. AFAIC. everything else looks okay, except maybe the michelin tires. armadillos are pretty effin' durable comparatively...but they're heavier. i'd go with a 17T cog instead of the 15, even with a front brake...maybe even an 18 or 19 just to save your back on take-offs.

and yeah, talking about how much tires weigh might be a little weight weenie-ish, but armadillos are super durable, but they feel like bricks compared to most tires.

dammit...i'm drunk and i wanna ride, but i'm to the point where riding might be a little hazardous to me health...

I should have mentioned - it should be a steamroller frame and built for strength and durability!

i think all the stuff i listed would be pretty durable...although the steamroller is a ****ing tank compared to anything made of 853...what with the steamroller made from 4130 and all...although, i like to think my lotus sprint track frame is more durable than a steamroller.

I'd second what OTS said about the 17 tooth cog, maybe even an 18, it depends on what your hills are like, I have been running 49x17, but just switched to an 18 so I can go on longer rides up more hills.

Ok - the original post was to piss off people to come and show me the quality components. Damn if I know! I was going to Yojimbos but I am too white bread to go near the 'green. Basically I am going to assemble a list to send to him so he can mail me back all the parts without having to go near the 'green. Yes I am a suburbanite whoosie... So what?

So getting back to the topic on hand, how does this new list sound? Are we there yet? Out of curiosity, would a Chris King headset (even though it's $$$) be a better choice of headset?

I am going for durability baby - I'm not a weight weenie so if you see something that can be added or changed to suit this purpose let me know!

PS: I kind of need a final 'ok' from you guys by tomorrow... That's when I'd like to place the order for everything. Otherwise my fiance will hit me across the head and throw me in a well from driving her crazy. And you wouldn't want to live an episode of the Ring would you? Didn't think so! :p

i agree with jitensha...forget the cinelli stuff. i only listed it because i already have the bars. they're nice and all, but more expensive and could be hard to find. the nitto bars are much more accessible...

also, the suntour seatpost is another bit that i already have...they're not made anymore, so you'd have to go searching for them (they pop on ebay with a certain amount of frequency though). and the cubic chainring is like, a $150 chainring. the first list i made was basically a "dream bike" configuration....

i'm also not sure about the availability of the american classic headsets either...i know of two places here in the bay area where i could pick one up, but they definitely don't have them in stock or anything...

and the pedals are really a personal preference...if you want eggbeaters, get eggbeaters. same goes for everything else.

you should really check the prices on some of the stuff i listed...mostly because a lot of it is pretty expensive and not really worth it for a first fixed attempt. your first list was fine except the hubs. and i only say that because you were stressing durability.

CK makes a great, very smooth headset, that looks pretty and has a great warranty. they're also expensive, and some of my friends have complained that they are difficult to install.

other companies make great, very smooth headsets that look pretty but lack the warranty. the warranty isn't really necessary though if you maintain your headset properly.

a CK headset would be an "okay" choice. they're fantastic and pretty and smooth, but not worth the money IMO...CK road hubs, are a different story entirely...

a few guys on the old skool track list have had problems lately with the nut falling off of the screw while riding... nothing catastrophic, but the conventional wisdom is to just ditch the masterlink and just join it with a chain tool. YMMV

So who makes a better hub then, Chris King or Phil Wood?

depends on what you'd be using it for. to the best of my knowledge, CK does NOT make a track hub, since the big draw of his hubs is the 72 pawl design. so, for track, i think if you're going for long-term durability, phil is the only way to go.

phil's cassette hubs are insanely heavy, BUT, i've seen many favorable reviews from tourers and tandem riders...

if i had to choose between the two for road, i'd go with the CK's just because they're light and offer nearly instantaneous engagement. not that i'm some sort of road freak or anything...but they're super nice hubs.

The Steamroller is a very durable frame with comfortable (read non-track) geometry.

Rather have a high quality headset. I am anti-maintenance and pro-quality. I want the components selected to reflect this.

Isn't this going to be a fixie? King doesn't make a fixie flip-flop just a SS and besides the spacing is 135. The steamroller is spaced at 120, which means you can't use them.

That aside, they are both excellent hubs. I have Kings on my mountain bike and Phils on my SS. Some people have a problem with the fishing reel sound the Kings make when you coast but you shouldn't be slacking off anyway.

Yup, that is how to build the bike. Who cares what name brand stuff you have on your bike? If you are into that, you might want to hang out in the Road Bike forum and invest in some colorful spandex, haha.

What you do is build your bike, break it riding the piss out of it, fix it, ride it, break it....
