Ride - All 100 miles of it!


It seems we all know about someone who has been affected by a blood cancer. When our nephew, Scotty was diagnosed with leukemia last year at the age of 16, it had a profound effect on our entire family. We realized that life is fragile and it can change in a moment for any of us. We decided that we CAN DO something to help. We joined Team in Training to show our support and to give hope. We will be riding a tandem road bicycle in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride. We'll be riding 100 miles, with thousands of people with the same mission, around Lake Tahoe on 6/7/09. During the year, we ride in the woods on the mountain tandem and also along streets on the road tandem. For this event, we will be riding the road tandem and we begin our training on February 1st with a 15 mile bike ride. Each week, we will add 5 miles to the distance until our training goals are met. Because of the elevation, the hills, and the distance, this will be the most difficult event we have ever done. We are completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I know my wife posted this early on, and honestly I wondered if the money goals we needed to raise could be met.

It's been right at 2 months since this was posted. While we haven't reached the goal, we are very close, and barring no disasters should have it well under control by showtime.

I didn't post to ask for donations for us. I wanted to mention that for us, some fund raising has been a high point while other attempts weren't so good. This happens and is all a part of it.

Regardless, so far we have met many people that have been affected by Leukemia and other horrible diseases. Some folks know people still dealing with these diseases while others have lost family and friends. Each of these people were total strangers. Some were met at events and others just would come up to us when we would stop to take a quick break during a training ride.

The reason for my post, is to let others know that it is a good thing to do and makes you appreciate what you have.

Regardless of the organization affiliation, get involved. Even if your goals aren't met, the effort is worth it and helps many. I don't claim to be an emotional type person, but the stories heard and praise plus thanks from so many that show their support can bring a tear to almost anyone.

Honestly, coming into this I never expected this. The ride is almost moot by comparison to helping others.

OK enough soapbox.

Thanks to everyone that volunteers and helps every good cause out there. I do realize 99.9% are people that will never visit this site or read this post, but it's OK.
