Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My bike was stolen last night - Tuesday, January 26th - in Southpark, near the intersection of 28th and A street.

Description:

It's a 60cm charcoal silver cyclocross bike, with mostly black components, silver cranks, and white tires. (See picture.)
The bike has no logos on the sides, but it does say 'Gunnar Cycles' on the head tube badge. It also has a small cartoon of a dog on the seat tube. (See picture.)
Other components: Ultegra compact cranks and hubs, Shimano 105 STI shifters, Chris King headset, Paul cantilever brakes, Thomson stem and seatpost, XT rear derraileur, Salsa Bell Lap handlebars, white Vittoria Evo Open Corsa CX tires.

Really notable stuff:

The wheels, stem and seatpost are connected with Pitlock anti-theft skewers. Instead of a quick release or hex bolts, they look like small smooth cones on one side, and a round collar on the other. They require a special wrench to remove. So, they'll have to literally tear the bolts off to remove those parts or even change the tires.
It has black reflective tape on the rims, seatpost, and handlebars. You can't really see the tape in the daylight, but in direct light it reflects back brightly.

I appreciate any information or help you can offer that will return this bike.

I've filed a police report, emailed every bike shop in San Diego with a web presence, and I'm calling the rest now.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you. :)

Calling all the pawn shops tomorrow. Someone just told me about that one today... total 'duh'.

Post an ad on Craigslist, if you haven't already, that way the thief can't try to sell it on CL and if he does, someone might catch that the two bikes are one in the same. Also make sure you watch CL for it.

Let me tell you from a personal angle: Don't bother, if you have filed a Police report, all pawnshops are REQUIRED to send a report of all merch taken in and if it has a serial number it MUST be present.

The loop will be completed without your involvement, better to check with the police or whomever has been assigned to your case than drive all over town or call them on the phone, mentioning your situation to a pawnbroker who has heard it all and then some from anyone and everyone.

Better to check at the swap meets and on C/L as previously mentioned.

Another good idea is to check used bike shops. I know when my trumpet was stolen, I called all the music stores in San Diego telling them to be on the lookout for it (gave description and serial number to each) and the ******* who stole it pawned it off in El Cajon the same day for $50 (worth at least $2500 - $3000, dumb ass). If he didn't die of an overdose, I would have killed him.

Maybe you'll actually find the guy who stole your bike and be able to get revenge?

Speaking of pawn shops, how did you approach them?

"hey, a bike of mine was stolen, did you buy it?"
I'd imagine that wouldn't go over well.
Did they just give the bike to you, or did you have to buy it back?

I would check them after 30 days or so if you want, they are required to hold them that long before selling (as are any secondhand dealers... music stores etc). If you do chance up on it I would contact the officer that was assigned to you case and let them know. I would also have a copy of the police report in hand before confronting or discussing the situation with any store owner.

Good luck on the return of your bike, I hate to say that much of this stuff never surfaces, but then again enough does to make it worth your while not to give up on it just yet.

That's really good to know. Thanks.

I'm working on my insurance claim tonight. I think I'm covered, not 100% sure, but others in the same situation tell me I am.

Man, what a pain. The extra time spent is more annoying than the loss of the bike itself in some ways.
