Hi,
som days ago I read in a swedish newspaper about a elderly couple out walking their dog. They were walking at a golfcourse when the dog went into a pond fetshing a stick. Now the dog went into trouble (probably because of the cold water) and the man went in to rescue the dog. He drowns trying to save the dog, right infront of his wife. What a horrible thing to witness. The paper tells the story and finish with telling how he drowns but not telling what happened to the dog.
Why is it people do not care to know what happened to the dog? Is the dog a minor creature? At least the man that drowned trying to save the dog did not think so. Why should the writer and/or the reader think so?
Just my thought :o
i dunno. even i *THE DOG DESPISER!!!* am curious.

Just my thought :o Have you heard any news about the dog? You think they would have said something (bastards). Seeing that this lady just lost her husband. It's times like these a good family pet is a great companion to have around.

I think you might have a fear of dogs, If you despise them. Have you had any bad experiences with dogs? I just want to know and not trying to start something. As you can tell from my avatar I do like dogs and I also know some dogs can get mean at times especially when they sense fear.

No I have not read or heard anything about the dog and this is typical :( I guess this is a problem with reporting journalists and readers all over the world, people are just not interested in an animal when there is a human suffering involved. People tend to rank the human suffering so much higher that the animal suffering gets totally lost in comparison. Excuse me for generalizing but the truth is I have stopped being surprised by the way many people looks at animals. This is not the first time I have encountered this sort of biased/slanted "news" viewing
You are absolutely right. A pet can be a good friend for life.

Your right. When my Mother past away of cancer 4 Years ago. My house was filled with people and Relatives I had never seen before and some of them had not even called us for years. I was thinking where hell were you for the last year and half of my Mothers life when she was suffering.
After 4 days of that it's time to pack up the back pack and head up into the mountains with the dogs (Good friends indeed) The mountains and the dogs helped to get my head straight. They were by my side like they always had been!

I'm sorry to hear about your mother.
I think I took the loss of my dog fifteen yers ago harder than I would have done if losing a distant relative. I believe it's with a dog as with a child. You have to look after a dog like with a child and therefore you feel a responsability for their wellbeing.
Losing a pet is like losing a relative. It can be as hard to deal with for a loving master (is that the right word?) as losing a relative or friend. A dog or other pet often becomes a true friend. It can be hard to understand for a person whom have never had a pet, but is a fact to us who have had the joy of having a pet.
I sure hope the dog in the article made it up from the water. If not, the poor widow had a double sorrow/mourn.

I'm sorry to hear about this story.
One thing I know is I would be willing to risk my life for my dog just as I would for a daughter. I'm so tired of people's attitudes that dogs are posessions of people. I adopted my dog, just as I would have adopted a human baby. Therefore I am a pet parent, not a pet owner.
It was very uncompassionate of the media to not even mention what happened to the dog. Hopefully these attitudes towards animals will eventually change.

Yes, and I believe the change is already taking place, though very slowly. We change peoples attitude to not just pets but all animals by discussing these matters. When people change, the press changes with them. It is for regular people the press exist. The writers are also people (hard to believe sometimes ;) ) that have to change.
Have anyone read Richard Adams Watership Down? I have just read it and I love it. A great story of love, adventure, curage, and sacrifice. All seen thugh the eyes of wild rabbits.
I have jut started reading same writer's Plague Dogs. This author really have a great talant for writing from animal perspective. This book is about two dogs escaping from an institution that make experiments on animals in the most horrible ways. They eventually mix up with a wild fox who teach them to survive. I have read about 150 pages and it is a very good book that I gladly recommend to anyone.
I'm pretty sure this (http://aftonbladet.se/vss/nyheter/story/0,2789,463659,00.html) is the same story. The dog survived.

Thanks for the link! That is the same story. The couple had two dogs and one of them went into the water. It is a big pond, about 5000 square meters and parts of it pretty deep, 4-5 meters. The dog seems to have get caught in some waterplants and was drowning, the man swims out to save the dog but does not make it in the cold water. The wife went into shock. Two divers found the man half an hour later, dead. The dog made it to shore.

People treat their children like possessions too.
