I have a road bike & a FG/SS track bike (for street) & am trying to decide if adding a 29r would get me to play on the CX races in town or of I should get a diff. tire/wheelset for my FG bike (frame will hold 28 or 32).

Input is appreciated...

When I first started I raced a Surly Steamroller for several races. I was able to fit 700x32c file-tread tires under it, and Nashbar long-reach caliper brakes worked great. Not tons of clearance, but no major issues.

29er would work fine too, just use lighter tires. Portaging a bit unfun, but definitely workable. Plus, you'd then have a mountain bike!

A Monocog would be a perfect entry-level CX bike, especially if you're just looking to try out a few C races. If you like it, buy a CX bike, if you don't, then you've still got a pretty rad mountain bike that you can beat around on.

Add a bike, don't change the tires.
