...the difference between being a "yes-man" and a whiner.

The yes Man is the public face, but then whines about it in private?

I don't think these are the same thing at all. I've known yes men who were happy to lick boots. Think Waylon Smithers.

I would say at least 50% in terms of salary...

A yes man can still get things done, just agrees with upper management. A whiner just whines, generally about upper management.

That about sums it up.

The yes-man is the ass kisser that is always agreeing with the boss/upper management. No matter what they say, how stupid, he agrees and puts on a 'public front' that its just fine. Never complains (publicly).

Whiner is just the opposite. He never agrees with boss/upper management. He constantly whines about every little change or decision that is made.

Is there a fine line to be had? Is there a gray area?

perhaps clarify how you think they are similar before we distinguish them--

yes men and whiners are mutually exclusive but possibly overlapping categories

1. to mark off as different (often fol. by from or by): He was distinguished from the other boys by his height.
2. to recognize as distinct or different; recognize the salient or individual features or characteristics of: It is hard to distinguish her from her twin sister.
3. to perceive clearly by sight or other sense; discern; recognize: He could not distinguish many of the words.
4. to set apart as different; be a distinctive characteristic of; characterize: It is his Italian accent that distinguishes him.
5. to make prominent, conspicuous, or eminent: to distinguish oneself in battle.
6. to divide into classes; classify: Let us distinguish the various types of metaphor.
7. Archaic. to single out for or honor with special attention.
–verb (used without object)
8. to indicate or show a difference (usually fol. by between).
9. to recognize or note differences; discriminate.

Why are we all thinking that it is important to think something is alike in order to distinguish.

Why are we all thinking that it is important to think something is alike in order to distinguish.

the underlying assumption here is that most of us seem to think the two categories are
dissimilar rather than alike so distinguishing the two is redundant.

For example: yes man = mindless subordinate who follows orders without question
and never naysays the superior.

whiner: complains about every little thing, often suggesting that a better course of action
would be more prudent.

A yes man would never question or complain because to do so would fail to mirror back
the wishes and views of the superior party, so by definition, a yes man is very unlikely to be
a whiner. Given these definitions, when asked to distinguish the two it is reasonable to ask how
they are similar--so that if any area of of actual overlap is found they can be distinguished if relevant.
In other words, when you ask to distinguish two things that are different by definition, it begs the question
"how are they similar."

Claro?

I fully support the plan to kill the whiners. It is the best plan I have ever heard ever in the history of ever.

( i cannot believe those asshats in management are trying to have me killed. I could do a better job than any of them on my worst day.)
