Tandem Cycling - Spring break tandem ride suggestion

I'm seriously developing cabin fever in snowy detroit. i wonder if folks could suggest an easy trip for my daughter and i on our tandem over her spring break (the week after easter). it should start no more than a day's drive from detroit, and the more opportunities for a 10 yr old to have fun the better! even a hotel, with several out-and back rides would be okay. but it must be warmer than our 16 degrees!

More than a day's drive from Detroit, but there is some excellent riding just outside Orlando, and I hear they have some things for 10 year olds there.

jeez, i am so glad she's not looking over my shoulder! that's a long way. And i don't need King Rat taking my money! my old burley will not crate up small, so i'm thinking something a little closer...

By Spring Break the weather around DC can be pretty good but you can't count on it.

Afraid there's not a heck of a lot within a days drive from Detroit that's guaranteed to be warmer and easy to get to.
By Easter time (April) it may be nice and quite a bit warmer and you could do a several days tour in the Thumb area, the Maumee area in Ohio or even in Ontario.
Some good riding in all those places and you would not have to worry about packing up the Burley too far.

Easter falls late this year (Sunday the 12th). So you're really looking at the third week of April. The real question is less warmth than rain. While it's possible to get cold/snow, it is rare. If I were you I'd make plans to go where the weather is best, with several options on tap, and then check the forecast. Niagara Falls/Niagara on the Lake is nice. The northeast corner of Ohio seems to have some nice rides. There's a major bike path (rails to trails, paved) recently put in in the Elkhart county area of northern Indiana. My experience is limited to the Niagara area, the others are "on the list".

So a little more investigation found a neat destination! Lexington Kentucky for the National Horse Park. There have got to be some scenic rides around there.

It's a bit far, 600 mi from Detroit, but how about the Spring Eastern Tandem Rally? It's April 16th to 19th in Maryland.

The spring eastern sounds like a nice time. Will have to give that some more thought.

We have made a few trips to the Silver Comet and Chief Laidga in April to ride in warmer weather. The Silver Comet starts on the west side of Atlanta and connects to the Chief Laidga at the Ga/Al state line. The two trails are about 90 miles long and make for nice riding. Atlanta would have other things to do but not many touristy things to do along the rest of the trail.

We've driven down from Bloomington, IN to do the Horsey Hundred in the Georgetown area (slightly north of Lexington) for the last three years. That ride is in May and it's a truly beautiful area for riding. That ride has multiple routes of different distances. Some of them include going by many of the beautiful horse farms / stables. The host club, The Bluegrass Cycling Club, would be worth joining to get access to riding maps for the area. Except for the possibility of spring rains, it should be beautiful. See the club site:

The rails to trails ride in Ohio mentioned in another post is a great trail if you like that kind of riding.

Bloomington, IN

My partner and I are planning a spring break down in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee--we fully intend on taking our new tandem out for a few spins while we're down there. It's the Smokies, but there are some "flat" areas as well for us to get some easy rides in! Weather should be in the 50s and 60s, with some rain mixed in with some very pleasant riding weather.

Our spring break is early this year--third week in March. I'll be sure to post a review of how things go!

This community is great! all of these suggestions are great. we're riding GOBA again this summer, it'll be in north ohio, so i think i'm gonna shoot for Lexington, KY, with a "backup plan" for weather.

Good riding around Georgetown just north of Lexington. We plan to ride GOBA next summer and will look for you.
