i have been riding with clipless pedals for about 2 years now (including mountain biking). during that time, i had my cleat right under the ball of my foot. today, for the first time ever, i moved my cleat back so it was behind the ball of my foot. let me tell you this...having the cleat behind the ball of your foot greatly increases your climbing ability and speed. i did some hills today that i would have died on before but went right up today. if your looking to climb hills better, adjust your cleat so it is behind the ball of your foot. good luck.

I always read that you moved the cleate forward for power, backward for comfort, and on the ball of your foot for in between. Maybe I'll give it a try.

if you move your cleats backward too far you will be using less of your calves muscles. If you move the cleats too far forward, you will use your foot muscles more..
Feet are shaped differently and shoes fit differently from person to person. So "forward" or "backward" position on the shoe is all relative..
You need to find the right spot for your body and shoes.
