44/16 74.7 GI 22 mph @ 100 rpm

mostly flat with some rolling ant mounds, by most standards

42 x 15 for 75.6 Gear Inches

Works okay for climbing as long as the climb is not too steep or too long, tops out at 27-28 on descents.

40/16 on one bike, 45/18 on the other....I see a ton of steep and sustained climbs. Both are super easy to pedal on the flats.

Sheldon says 82.8GI. So about 83 :thumb:

Wheel/tire size play a role in it. My current whip is a pos conversion with huge 27 inchers. Makes a ~2GI difference over a 700x23.

44 x 18 and mostly freewheel, not fixed.

My 25mi r/t commute has just over 1800' of climbing. 65.4 g.i. is plenty for me when contending with 3 ascents of 7% grade sustained over at least 1 mile.

Only 44/17 at the moment cause of the hills and didn't want to get anythin to tough at first, soon to be 46/17

Depends on the tire which has been said and crank size.

700x23c with 52/17 is 80.4.

My math with a 172.5/170/165mm crankarm with a 700x23c tire setup with comes to around 80
The Gear inch calculator I have points to 80
Sheldon's said with those measurements 80.4

But having tried your settings for GI, I see that you're using a 700x32c tire to achieve the ~83GI

It's good you were able to do the math to figure out he was running a 700x32, but at the same time it's unfortunate you were unable to use your reading powers to figure out he clearly stated he was running 27 inch wheels.

You get partial marks for showing your work though :thumb:

I run anywhere from 59 to 81 gear inches on 4 fixed gear and 1 ss bike... my happy place for most riding is 70 gear inches.

The lower gearing (59 GI) is on my touring bike and the 81 GI is on my vintage 1940 path racer... I will probably reduce that gearing to 72 the next time I am at my shop.

My road bike runs 74 gear inches with a 52:18.

A 52:17 on a 27 inch wheel is 83 gear inches and 80 gear inches with a 700:23

gnome - You should probably mention that the 52:14 is on a folder with 20 inch wheels.

:D

I run a 52 with a 14 and 16 tooth cog on my folder and in looking at the huge ratio most folks wonder how one can turn the pedals.

Sorry for spoiling your fun... and I forgot that your 20 wasn't the folding version.

It is fun to freak folks out though...

could anyone suggest a cog to go with a 40 tooth chainring? conditions are road riding with light to medium hills. Looking for suggestions for a fixed cog and for a SS freewheel. Thanks!
