red trolly race is this weekend...might be my first...but am holding back due to insurance issues. i have no med insurance right now and therefore when i do ride it is pretty conservative, nothing crazy. i figured since USCF races offer insurance i should be good to go...but how good is there coverage? $5000 deductible? http://www.usacycling.org/forms/EventInsurance.pdf

That is not medical insurance. Go get some real high deductible medical insurance.

You go and mess yourself up, you have a $5k deductible and 25k of coverage. However, if you ride conservatively, you will be OTB in 1 mile, and then if you crash, it is pretty much guaranteed to be your stupidity that would cause it.

fees- 25 race entry, if you have no annual license ($60/yr), then you need the one day for $10. Day of registration being $5 you also must remember unattached rider fee (in case they enforce it and you are not on a USAC team) for another $5. So, $25 + $10 + $5 + $5 = $45 total.

Don't know about this year and San Diego and all, but last year, it seemed like Cat 5 races were always sold out, so there was no "Day-of" registrations available.

i don't know why i thought the race was this weekend..thanks umd...it does not look like i will be doing it either way...looks like i should not count on their coverage...plus $45 for 30 min of racing! i got the impression it was cheaper because it cost about $10 to race at the velodrome here.

anyway...thanks for your responses...i am very eager to race but am willing to wait until everything works out better.

Check into accident insurance but be sure to check exclusions (bike racing not motor racing) or get a statement from company not the agent it is covered. You can get a policy with disability payments in most states.
