And then you'd have a hard time finding and picking up all the keys that you dropped in the process! Don't do it man. It's. just. not. worth. it.

Kryptonite Mini U-Lock for the back wheel and frame, sturdy combination cable lock for the front wheel and frame. I think that's basically straight from Sheldon Brown's website.

I personally just use a sturdy combination cable lock around one of the wheels and the top tube, locked to a bike rack. My college campus is relatively safe, even at night. I always try to lock up next to either a much nicer bike or a bike with a noticeably weaker lock.

And a Kryptonite, just to be safe.

kryptonite fahgeddaboudit + 4 foot cable to get my back wheel

honestly i don't remember the last time i heard of a bike in richmond being stolen due to someone tampering with the lock. usually it's just people being careless/not locking their wheels

And literally every ****ing person in Richmond rides a road bike.

I swear I've never seen so many road bikes (read 99% fg) in one place than when I came up for best friends day a year or two ago. Holy ****.

Is there any way to have Kryptonite make you a lock keyed the same as one you currently own? I'd like to have a NY chain, but I currently run a Mini-U. I'd like to able to run both with the same key.

i just use a bike club jr. you know the clubs that u have for ur car steering wheel?

they make a bike lock that looks like a U-lock but it is adjustable in length unlike a typical u-lock.

yes, i have this exact thing. i have a mini, and a ny chain with the orange disc lock keyed alike.

however, only certain keys can be alike. i also have a ny std and ny fahgeddaboutit and they are not keyed the same, kryptonite would not do it.

letters@irco.com is who you email to get this service.

anyways, as the the OP. the obvious solutions are:

1. read sheldons locking strategy.
2. buy a mini u. the kryponite mini is fine. the onguard mini is supposedly better, because it does not have the "bent foot" design, both ends that go into the thingamabob are shaclked or whatever. i dont know the proper terminology. the onguard is also cheaper. i dunno if it is a huge difference.
2. use a locking skewer for the front wheel, or carry a combo cable for the front wheel.
3. if you are paranoid, you could get the faghedaboudit, as it is probably the hardest mofo you can find in america. but you will be ok with a mini. put that ***** in your back pocket.

you love it, sure, until some crackhead sees that barrel lock mechanism, jams a bic pen into said mechanism, and makes off with your ride.

Take the best of the best Kryp Ulock and that jr. bike thing and you've got a million dollar idea. It won't eliminate theft, but it certainly eliminates two of existing bike locks' vulnerabilities.

Someone make this soon or I will. Then I'll see you in the bike porn thread.

im skeptical to the assumption that an adjustable shackle would be as secure than a solid one.

if your really paranoid you should use a decent chain AND a decent ulock.

different type of theft techniques required for each style so you can almost guarantee no one is gonna take the time to try to get through all that mess.

i only do this cause my bike sits out all day while i work. also i don't have to lug the locks around with me (they stay locked to the rack at work).

if i am out and about running errands i just use a ulock and bring my bike inside whenver possible. the NY chain is a b!tch to carry around.

a safe college campus in philly? the closest thing to that i would think would be Eastern University, but that isn't in philly, a short train ride away. where do you go to school?

For the Evo Mini U folks: Can you try and stick your key in half way and turn it? Does it turn? Also, do you guys put any grease/oil, etc into the key hole as maintenance?

It'll turn, but not all the way. Then, you gotta make sure to get everything back as to line up all the cylinders for the next time you actually wanna open it. Otherwise, you'll be fumbling around for a little while getting all the cylinders engaged by the key.

I used a shot of Weldtite TF2, a wet, heavily-laced-with-teflon lube maybe 7 months ago, right after I got the lock, and it's been holding fine since. I use it on my guns, knives, door hinges, and even the axle of my laptop's fan. Truly a do-all lube. Smells interesting too, not quite the same as the bananas smell of tri-flow though.

Kryptonite faggetabouutit u lock is the best! It is kinda mini, though nothing like the evo. Kryptonites thickest lock and not too heavy. it fits perfectly though the back wheel, frame and around a parking meeter. and another for the front wheel!

if you live in nyc as I do, make sure you buy the NYC locks from kryptonite, they are the only ones that have the insurance policy in nyc. All those people using the evo mini because you can put it in your back pocket are stupid, as kryptonite will not cover losses in nyc with the evo series, only the NYC series!

University of Delaware, I live in the Philly/South Jersey region when I'm not at school. The only thing I need to worry about is townies ripping off bikes when they get a bit drunk and decide to go for a ride.

Why would you need a padlock when the NY chain comes with a (more secure) disc lock?

In Miami bike theft isn't common unless you lock up with a shoe lace, or decide to leave your bike locked in the same place for over 12 hours. Sheldon brown method might be all you need(unless you have quick releases).

A nice lock and chain will work with any bike. I just use a pad lock and a chain I found in my garage thick enough to deter.

The link under chain was an example of a nice set-up.

I apologize for my 2 cents. Anything else?

I still think the sheldon method of locking up the rear wheel is silly. Yes, it may be hard to cut through a rear wheel, but I bet it could be done in under 5 mins. The only thing getting through a decent U lock in under that time is an angle grinder, or possibly large pnuematic cutters like fire crews have, but neither is exactly easy to carry/inconspicous. So what if the theif doesn't get the rear wheel. As a percentage thats generally only 25% max of the value gone.

IMO best way is a decent cable wrapped around everything like a flipping chinese puzzle game, and a u lock through frame AND rear wheel (or a decent chain if U lock isn't feasible, still tough to get through and requires a different set of tools to the cable).

I think the NYC locks are covered for one year only. If I read correctly, you can pay for a 2 or 3 year policy.

That is something I really need to look into. Probably the best investment for a bicycle after all.
