I will be in Myrtle Beach SC from May 1st to May 7th. Anyone know of good road or MTB rides? How about places to ride? Thanks in advance

There used to be a great place for MTB right in MB until the land developers came in. There were twisty trails, 10 and 20 ft dropoffs, sand pits, woods, waterfront, cliffs, a fern patch, camel humps, mud pits, hardpack, creekbeds, and fire roads. All between 17 and the waterway. I feel like crying when I think about it. GONE. But you can buy a house there now.
The only place I know of now is at Calabash, NC, about 20 miles north of MB. Go north on Hwy 17 go past North MB and Little River. There will be a SC welcome center on the left and a road that goes off to the right at a 45 degree angle. The sign says Calabash. Take that. Right there on the right is a dirt parking area. There used to be an old house there, but I think they tore it down. There is a chain link fence with a couple entry ways. That is the start of the trails.
You will see a road to the right. You will cross that as you ride the trails and can use that to get your bearings. There are some pretty good trails back in there, but not a lot of them. There are a couple pretty fast spots that are good. One is sort of a creek bed that runs downhill. At the bottom there is a sharp right into a climb. The trails will take you down to the Intracoastal waterway, nice views. There is also a small family graveyard just off the road. There are graves there that are from the Revolutionary and Civil War. Then you can always head into Calabash for a fresh, inexpensive seafood lunch. Miss Ella's is good for lunch, Dockside for dinner. Unless Veghead means you don't eat seafood.
For road riding, I would say to start in the same spot and go north through Calabash. It is a 2 lane road and goes through some nice scenery. There are a couple spots where you can go out onto the barrier islands.
You can ride Ocean Blvd in MB. Just be careful. Tourists are often seeing the ocean for the first time and are NOT looking at traffic, much less bikes. the north end is better for riding. It goes through residential areas. The south end is all the hotels.
MB is my home town, but I haven't been there for a while. So an LBS may have some other ideas.

Thanks for info. Last year was not much fun for my bikes. I think they will like NC better.

While I will be the first to promote N.C., home sweet home. These guys may be able to help you find a place in Myrtle to cycle... http://www.strandcyclist.com ...They have been friendly to me in the past, of course you could always ride up and down the strand and hammer the headwinds. They can be much worse than hills, I guarantee!!!!
Enjoy,
