Winter Cycling - if it's 37 degrees, sunny with little wind

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If it's 37 degrees, sunny with little wind what should I wear? The last time I went riding it was a nice warm fall day. Can I bike in jeans? Would a wool cap and eye protection be enough or do I need to cover my face?

I think I can figure out my upper body options, plus that's easy to layer.

Suggestions from my beginning commuting blog (http://beginningcyclecommute.blogspot.com/search/label/clothing).

Can I bike in jeans? Yes. I did this morning.

Would a wool cap and eye protection be enough or do I need to cover my face? A wool cap may or may not be required at 37 degrees... if you you have a helmet and the wind is calm, you may be okay without it. If no helmet, wear a cap for sure. If you have a headband to keep your ears warm, that may be all you need. If you have a balaclava, you could wear that too.

I (commute) bike in jeans down to 0F. After that I have to add a layer. At 37F, I usually just wear something over my ears, and my normal helmet. I find that my balaclava is nice for the first couple of minutes until I get warmed up, but YMMV.

Depends on your body's abilitty to cope with the cold.. Short rides jeans are ok, if don't mind the lack of mobility. 37 is cold on descents.. For me, it would be tights with chamois, because I do distance. And a good base layer, because I like to ride without the bulk of a heavy winter jacket.

Jeans may be uncomfortable for a longish ride, and you may want some alternative trousers. In those conditions, I could go either way on long trousers/ shorts, but would definitely wear a sweatshirt and some gloves, to keep a layer of warm air around my top half. Your hands are doing very little, so cover them up, or they'll hurt.
