Foo - real life bad habits computing has given you

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I really need control+Z in real world.

I've slowly incorporated "lulz" and "lolled" into my vocabulary. They're just so fun to say!

Also, probably bad posture.

bf has made me look for certain emoticons in my messenger services- like the wtf face, or twitchy. :twitchy:

Obscure references (or references at all) that work given a large enough audience online, tend to fail miserably in real life, unless you know the other person knows the subject material as well as you do. Otherwise you sound like a jerk or a moron. Or more so.

A big one for me is that when typing things on a computer, I have time to compose what I say and how I say it, if I desire to. Relying on this has left my mind completely unable to form complete spoken sentences in a timely fashion. It's frustrating.

I can see how that would happen.
On the other hand, my internet diarrhea is as bad as what comes out of my mouth- IM-wise its a nightmare. At least on BF I can go back and edit :)

At least there's a bit of allowable composition time. You can't exactly stand there and stare blankly while you come up with a response in real life, though. :P

i occasionally find myself saying 'correct', or 'incorrect.'

my 'get out of jail free' card is that i realized my father does the same. guess the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree.

i don't see why not.Of course you can, but it's best not to. Socially unacceptable and all.

But maybe that'll change once everyone has grown up on these stupid glowing boxes.

i occasionally find myself saying 'correct', or 'incorrect.'Heh, I've wondered.

At least it's not too weird of a thing to say.

Drunken posting. I am the same person online and in real life (and thus there's little need to explain how I am in real life), except for the drunken posts, which are 100% fabricated. I'll usually have had something to drink before the drunken posts, but they're carefully edited for degraded spelling and grammar. That said, the outrageous content is 100% real.

Being worse about keeping in touch with friends. Since e-mail is a daily job now, I've been less and less inclined to deal with personal e-mails. And so my turnaround time on personal e-mails keeps increasing. When I started my e-mail checking job in 2001, personal e-mails were generally responded to on the spot. Now, they often linger for weeks.

At work I found some crazy picture of a leprechaun (St Patricks Day decoration) and wrote "ceiling leprechaun is watching you masturbate" on it, then hung it up the suspension wires for the ceiling panels (in a place where they were missing). I think only like one person got the joke, the rest had no idea what it was supposed to mean.

My Spanish and Portuguese are 100x better written than spoken for this very reason... especially in Portuguese, my brain is not much faster than my fingers, and is definitely slower than my mouth. Hah.

I try to imitate :twitchy: and  when I am listening to people and they say odd or stupid things. I generally only do it when the other person has looked away ;) but I am always imagining the silly little smilies.

Writing legibly is a huge chore for me, except in cyrillic. (If you know cyrillic cursive, you know a lot of the letters can be confused if not written legibly.) I only bother writing legibly in English for tests. I can, however, spell mot word correctly without the need to constantly use spellcheck--I know some people who cannot spell even the simplest word without spellcheck.:notamused:

Yesterday I had a book below my monitors, and was reading up. I then attempted to drag my mouse down below the screen to the book, to copy and paste some sample code.

I kept getting frustrated when my pointer would stop at the lower edge of my monitor.

Then I realized, I can't cut and paste from hard copy. Doh!

Oh yeah, the cut and paste thing. Wife and I do that a lot.

Also we have that on our computers - when we want to take something from one to put on the other.

I was proofreading a paper yesterday and found emoticon codes in the punctuation. I started looking for that after this professor gigged me on points because emoticons don't belong in an academic paper. :p

Well lessee.....

I find myself doing the botto and telling people they are correct or incorrect.

I told someone they were pwnd.

I changed my mind on something I needed a person to do and told them "ahh nevermind. Delete."

And then when we were talking to a person who was going to get in trouble I said to them that they better be cool because they don't want to get an infraction or get banned.

I had a friend, while doing an organic chemistry presentation to a bunch of other professionals had the word 'WOOT' written in the margins of one of his slides to highlight a particular benefit of something or other. I just wanted to be there for the following explanation of what that meant to a room full of scientists:

"You know it's like when you... If you totally pwn somebody... GAH! How do you not know what that means!"

I don't feel the need to remember anything ever because... I can just google it, right?

Why bother googling something when you can be ultra-lazy by going onto a BB like this, ask a question, and have someone ELSE google it for you. :p Example: Post the question "Does Trek make road bikes?" and you'll get numerous responses from roadies posting all there is to know about Trek roadbikes, including reviews and links to ther sites. Why waste time doing it yourself?
