i'm considering doing this for my first time and was wondering how tough it is to do on a fixed gear. i'm not a regular long-distance rider but have been riding round central park 4-5 loops. but how's the terrain, in terms of hills? think it's okay for my friends who don't regularly ride to join?

yes, they will have fun. the pace is generally very slow due to the amount of times you must stop for roads to open and close. Fixed gear should be ok as long as you are used to it. People are a little crazy with stopping suddenly etc.
