Foo - Drive a truck?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just wondering if any of you guys take pride in driving a truck :thumb:
Tell us what size, brand, model, mods, etc.
I drive a '96 Red F-150. No mods yet, but a cold air intake and a 9" inch lift coming soon.

Tonight's the night that we got the truck,
We're goin' downtown, gonna beat up drunks!
Your turn to drive, I'll bring the beer,
It's the late, late shift, no one to fear.

A pickup hardly qualifies as a truck. That said, it's what I drive. An old Toyota Tacoma. 150k miles and still runs great. I'd buy another if I could afford it right now. But I'm saving for a new bike.
You could get one of these: http://www.surlybikes.com/lht_comp.html

When I lived in Texas, the state required me to have a license tag which had "truck" at the top of it.
If the state of Texas thinks a pick up is a truck, then it's a truck.
Of course, the full size 1/2 Ton pick ups that are being built today are damn near as big as a "Duece and a Half" was in the 60s
If the state of Texas thinks a pick up is a truck, then it's a truck.Did you have to stop at truck weigh stations, or adhere to the lower "truck" speed limit (assuming either exist in Texas)?

No and No
I'm deciding between two vehicles come a new job and a paycheck. Basically Ford or foreign:
Honda Ridgeline -- if you are used to F-350s with decent lift kits, its not in the same league, but these days, I'm needing a DD that does the car thing about 90% of the time, then tow/haul stuff the remaining.
Ford F-150, 5.4L. Everything one would want in a pickup truck (although I wish Ford would put the 3 valve, 6.8 V-10 in F-150s). I worry though. The older ones were great (some need engine/trans work at 100k), but I've seen horror stories with '04s and some models. One of my ex-bosses had so much trouble with his, he had to invoke Texas lemon law provisions.
Since I'm mainly commuting these days, and not hauling stuff for campsites, I am leaning for the Ridgeline since its slightly smaller and better for town. However, another full-sized pickup isn't a bad idea either.

Ram 2500 Diesel, grossed out at around 17,000#
(BTW - there's a sport ute in that trailer along with a couple thousand pounds of stuff. We were moving)
What do you have in the box, Commander?
No and NoHuh. I wonder what the point of the differentiation was, then.
Probably just extra taxation or something. *shrug*

Have a look at a double cab tacoma. Ridgelines are hideous. 150's trail in reliability and the v8's get 15mpg. Resale value of tacomas is through the roof for a good reason.

In Texas, F-150s-F-350s are considered light trucks and regular car laws apply to them. This is different from 18-wheelers.
Any elected official that would try to change this would be tarred and feathered, because of the predominance on Texas roads of pickups and SUVs.

One reason I'm considering the Ridgeline is because a friend of mine works as a sales manager at a Honda place. So, most likely I can snag one for at or under invoice. I agree with you that they are ugly. If I wasn't able to pick one up for a steep discount, I'd just go for a full size pickup. Other than being ugly, the Ridgeline does what I want in a vehicle. Its able to tow decently (although I'd never get near its rated 5000 pounds. Ridgelines have their youtube FAIL (http://tinyurl.com/aoyngq) vids of what happens when one does try to tow too much.)
The F-150's full size 15MPG isn't that bad... its significantly better than my current ride. The only reason I'm not immediately considering another full size pickup is that my driving is city these days (with only weekends doing renfaire setup and takedown), so a smaller vehicle is a lot nicer when dodging pedestrians and getting into tight parking places.

Ouch. I know the Aussies do about 3-4 trailers per truck, sometimes up to 7-10 in rural areas. Texas at most allows two (and both cannot be full length), but there is a lot of pressure to get lawmakers to pass a bill so they can go up to three full length trailers, maybe four, so the NAFTA guys can haul more stuff from Mexico.
As for the 18-wheeler gig, one lesson I learned -- don't forget to replace your jake brake pads every 25k miles. ;)

Last 6 trucks have been/are Fords. 1974, 1978, 1994, 1997, 2003, 1996. All (except the last two) have run over 300,000 miles with minimal issues, the last two have over 150k on them. They were in order: F250 XL 390ci, F250 XL Camper Special blueprinted 460ci w/C6 tranny, Ranger 140ci 5 speed, F150 XLT 4.2l V-6 with factory tow package, F150 Lariat 4.6l V-8 tow package, F350 XLT PSD, Crewcab Dually nicknamed The Mother Ship. I have grossed TMS out at over 30k# when pulling our backhoe on a goose neck (not recommended per NCDMV Enforcement:innocent:) Probably the toughest truck I ever had was an Isuzu P'up Diesel 4x4, last time I saw it, it had over 500k on the odometer, only reason I got rid of it was because the body had rusted completely out.
Watch your towing on the Ridgeline they aren't particularly well suited for it. I saw one destroy the tranny on a long uphill in the NC mountains pulling a smallish Airstream. I pulled his trailer to the nearest campground while AAA hauled the Ridgeline back down the mountain to the nearest Honda dealer. Next time I heard from them they were driving a big Chevy with a Duramax:D
