Just up the street from me there are (were) two Bull Mastifs that are allowed to run loose. Even when the guy is not home he leaves the gate open and lets his dogs run loose. I have called animal control several times but they never do anything. Every time I walk past with my American Staffordshire Terrier (aka Pit Bull) the two Bull Mastifs come charging out to bark and snarl at us. Every time I scream at them, "STOP!" and they always do. They stop at the edge of their "territory" and bark at us. But this past Friday evening it didn't happen that way.
I was walking my dog when the two Mastifs came running out. I yelled stop and they kept on coming. They ran right out into the street and attacked my dog. Each one of them was more than twice the size of my Pit Bull. No way do I want to be in a dog fight between two Bull Mastiffs and a Pit Bull so I dropped his leash and got out of the way. My first thought was "That's it- my dog is dead. They're gonna kill it." But to my amazement Joe (my dog's name) tore the holy hell out of those mastifs. One of them ran off bleeding and yelping and Joe pinned the other one by the throat and blood was squirting all over. When Joe let go the mastif did not get up. I went and knocked on the door of the house but no one was home. Joe was covered with blood and I thought he was really tore up but when I got him home and washed him off I found that none of it was his blood. He wasn't hurt at all.
Now when I walk my dog up the street there is only one mastif and they are keeping it inside the fence. It just sits there and barks but it can't get to us. Anyway, I think there are two lessons to be learned here:
1) some people should not be allowed to own dogs and
2) never underestimate the ferocity of your loyal companion.

Some people should not own dogs (or any animals).
Many people that have dogs, should not have the kinds of dogs that they have. People are often poorly suited to the kinds of dogs that they own due to environmental or lifestyle issues.
I don't say "allowed", because I don't necessarily think it is the sort of thing that should be legislated. People ought to know better, or somebody ought to give them a piece of their minds.
my rules would be.
every person that owns a dog must build and fence and keep the dog in the fence.
if the dog wieghs over 30 lbs they must own at least 3 acres of land and fence it all in.
if the dogs bark all night long then they must be euthanised or have their vocal cords removed.
if someone allows their dog to chase someone else that is not on their property then any and all damage that is caused by the dog should be considered to be caused directly by the owner and the owner should have the proper charges for mauling a person put upon the owner and the owner should spend no less than 5 years in prison where they a vigorously gang raped every day until death.

I'd amend this one to read:
"Dogs must be kept in at night in a nice warm place, or a place where they can be warm (out of the weather), or the owner must be euthanized, unless he/she can find a more suitable home for the dog."
If dogs are inside they won't bark and annoy other people all night.
And let me add another:
"a dog may not be kept outside all day (while owner is at work) by it's lonesome self. Dogs must be kept in yards in pairs or more." They are pack animals and want company--one other dog buddy is better than no other dog buddy.
And some people should not be allowed to procreate.

i got a black lab and have had to kick the hell out of some other dogs that have messed with him ... hes 10+ years old, arthritic, 95 lbs. Yes we know hes overweight, we rescued him from the pound 4 years ago.
The one time my dog got out it was hilarious. He was running down a major throughfare and animal control saw it and so he runs back to the house and lies on the porce cause he couldnt get back in the gate, and animal control drags him off the porce and puts him in the truck .. then they knock and ask me if i have a black lab and i says yeah and he tells me what happened and gives me this big ass lecture about keeping my dog on my property so i says lemme get this straight.
You chased my dog back to the house, then dragged him off where he was supposed to be into the truck ... lame ... he threatened to take him in and make me pay the $45 but i wasnt havin it ... i walked right up to the truck and took my dog out and told the guy not to come around my neighborhood anymore.
And some people should not be allowed to procreate.
stop bein' a troll. if you'd been chased by the number of violent dogs i have you'd hate them too. and just because you put them inside doesn't mean they don't bark.
i think the best solution possilbe is to make dog owner live in a single area in every ctiy/county/ whatever.
that way the rest of us can ride and sleep in peace.

Why? Sheba ran loose and hung out with Libby for years. On my dead end backcountry road. (Yes we do have them here in the northern Adirondacks NY) Those two never came home with a dead animal or blood on them, Maybe a few burdocks and a ton of mud but that's it. I do see where you’re coming from. We do have a few bad animal owners here and I would like to drop kick the owners  His dogs are always running deer and their was a time I almost had to use that bear spray on them while riding home from work.
Not all dogs deserve to be fenced in.

Don't assume that just because your dogs never had blood on themselves that they never killed. Chances are good that they never killed with their mouths because they never learned to kill that way. BUT sometimes dogs kill just by running something to death.
When I was much younger we had a dog that ran loose and killed a neighbor's ducks by chasing them to death. The ducks just dropped over dead from stress and over-exertion. Our dog wore a dead duck for 3 days; from then on she was not afraid of ducks, but she would give them a VERY wide berth when passing them.
I'm serious. Zero population growth!
It's so sad that you've been so terrorized and your precious sleep disturbed.
Your idea sounds eminately reasonable as well as do-able. :/

No I'm positive both of them got whacked in the face by a porcupine. (VETS) When they were, right around 5 months old. After that they kept their distance from any animal. An if they were chasing animals they would have been shot by hunters after 7 to 14 years of running around! I do deer hunt. All deer hunters around near me say they have never had any problem with my dogs.
I hunt Just to feed myself and keep the population down or they would starve to death in the winter. I also share the food with the less needed.

Really, alot of dogs don't have a clue when it comes to killing something. I guess they have to learn it early on for efficient hunting.
I don't mind you hunting; humans have killed off so many other predators of deer that we (as humans ) need to act as the predators to keep their populations down and healthy. Good venison is pretty tasty. If you lived out here by me, I'd be trying to arrange a barter of some sort for some of your venison!
As a responsible dog owner/trainer, and who has written up a dangerous dog ordinance, I believe if you own a dog you are responsible for that dog regardless. I own an APBT (American Pit Bull Terrier) and I have had to physically assault 3 dogs that came at my dog. I had to kick an English Sheep dog in the head because the owner wasnt paying attention. I kicked a German Shepard in the face because he came at my dog.... again the owner wasnt paying attention. I also had to tackle a Dalmation at the vets because she has the attitude of attack before getting attacked. All the owners asked me why I assaulted their dogs especially since I had a Pit Bull. I told them thats the exact reason why I did it:
1) I probably just saved your dogs life.
2) My dog defends himself and hurts or kills your dog and this hits the papers....whos fault do you think it will be even though you were the dumba$$.
People should only be allowed to have dogs they can handle and outsmart. As far as the procreation goes....I think people should take an aptitude test before they breed.
Cycletourist...never underestimate your Amstaff. These dogs have such determination and stamina its amazing. The only time I would worry, if it were to come in contact with a Presa Canario. Those dogs are incredible and not to be messed with.

I am a meter reader so I see alot of dogs every single day (more than the law allows I think somedays). A Pitt is hands down the #1 fighting dog. Just look what it was bread for. Pit fighting!!! I've seen Pitts hanging on ropes from trees so the Pitt gets a tougher bite strength. Thats one dog I don't care if the owner says he won't hurt a fly I will not go in the back yard alone with it. The owner needs to put that dog away. Dogs moods can change and they can become very territorial. Your Pitt was acting like any dogs should when confronted with a situation where you can get hurt. He was the alpha dog thats for sure. Glad you weren't hurt.

First, its Pit Bull, not Pitt. A Pit Bull maybe the #1 fighting dog hands down when it comes to popularity but not when it comes to strength and power. The only reason why its the most popular is because its ease of access and they dont even come close to the expense of a Presa. A Presa is a Pit Bull on steroids. But you are right about being hesitant when seeing one in their yard while trying to do your job. There are way too many people of ill repute that breed and own this breed to trust what their (dogs)mental stability is, regardless of what the owner says. Better safe than sorry. If you came into my yard, my Pit Bull wouldnt attack but it would stand you off. He is a very friendly dog when out in public but not as friendly when at home... especially when my wife is alone.

The mastiff lived!! When I rode my bike this morning I saw there were two mastiffs in the yard (for the last several days there was only one. The injured dog must have been inside or at the vets office.) The gate was open and both dogs were outside the fence. One of them chased me and the other limped around in the yard and barked.
The owner is lucky his dog is still alive but apparantly he has learned nothing.
