Bicycle Mechanics - stuck cable stops

hi all

Last year I put a pair of cable stops onto the bosses that had downtube shifters. Now I want to take them off but they have become stuck and try as I might they won't come off. I did smother the inside with grease before installing.

I've tried spraying into the edges with wd40 where they have come away a bit with all the pulling and also I unscrewed the bolt and sprayed wd40 into the hole. Other than grabbing them with a pair of pliers and damaging them, are there any suggestions for less drastic measures?

Try spraying some household 409 and letting it soak for a bit, then twisting them out with needle-nose pliers. If not 409, then try getting some dishwashing degreaser in there.

When my kids left home I supplied each of them with a 2 piece tool kit: WD40 for things that are supposed to move but don't and duct tape for things that move but aren't supposed to.

First, tool up. WD40 is not an adequate substitute for LiquidWrench or PB Blaster.
Second, I grab cable guides with my channel locks and gently work them off.

+1 but maybe thread a long bolt into the stop and use that to pull on instead.

thanks for the responses so far. I'll definitely try out the liquid wrench (never heard of it before). As for the long bolt, wouldn't threading it mean the bolt will thread with the inside of the boss?

Into where the barrel adjuster goes, if there is one...

IMHO PB Blaster works better than Liquid Wrench and is as easily available (especially auto parts stores and home improvement centers). Now, the best stuff -- Kroil -- that's hard to find.

Don't cable guides bolt on? Maybe I'm thinking of cable stops.

+1 PB Blaster. Any home wrencher should have at least one can. It can be bought just about anywhere, including Walmart and Big Lots.
