I've got a Sugino Mighty Competition crank I'd like to use as a triple. This is a 144 BCD NR clone.

Willow triple adapters don't seem to be available, and the TA ones are pretty spendy, considering that they are a wear item.

I'll do the TA as a last resort, but I've seen some examples of people getting cranks machined/drilled to accept a third chainring, wondering if anyone has done that and if so, a recommendation on where to get this sort of work done.

Local in the Washington, D.C. area would be nice if this were possible.

There doesn't look to be a lot of material in there so I would not advise having them drilled and tapped. A machine shop should be able to do it but it might cost as much as getting a cheap triple crank and rings.

Unless you find a machinist who's helpful to the point of being mental, bored out of his skull, or for some strange reason has decided to do bike work pro bono there's no way you're gonna get your part machined for a lesser amount than what buying a triple or the required parts would cost you.
