Ellipses are prone to problems with the soft proprietary lockrings (stripping), the bearings (ovalizing), and the axles (breaking).

Good idea. He should buy those.

Is this just for cruising around the city? Open Pro CD to Formula and then pocket the rest. Get them built by someone who actually knows what they're doing, because the build is more important than the parts.

You could buy my Cane Creek Track V wheels, I have for sale, for under the amount you want to spend and have $$ left over. It comes with all you need except a cog, but the front has a little play not noticed while riding. PM me if you're interested

Those rims are nice, but I honestly don't see the point in buying Phils aside from flash. Once you replace the locknuts, Formulas will do everything that Phils do. When it's time for new bearings, just get the Phils if you really notice that very very slight amount of extra drag.

Of course, this is a thread about looking flashy, so I guess they kind of fit in here.

At least have the decency to get the LF Phils if you do buy them.

White Industries ENO Fixed hubs laced to Open Pros or Velociy Aeroheads with Sapim Laser spokes. Lighter and faster than anything else mentioned here, but won't win you any points since its not Phil, DA, or Superbe Pro....

Thanks for the advice as well as the offers. Gyeswho those Cane Creeks look great, I may PM you later if I decide to buy wheels soon. At this moment I'm still weighing my options. Kinda tempted to look for some Spinergy Rev-Xs despite horror stories of breakages. I'm relatively light @ 145 so they should be OK..

it's not about weight, it's about design. there are generations of Rev-Xs that fail and ones that do not.

Well, it's always about weight on some level or another, let me tell you that, but I'm glad you mentioned the design. I'll definitely research that.

What is the huge deal with wheel building. I'm sure there is much I don't know, but it seems to me outside of the right components, anyone could do an equally good job building a wheel and the only differences would be proper tension and truing.

But as far as hot wheels go, there is nothing hotter right now than H+son rims. Lace em to some of those new cane creek hubs on the previous page, I think they are called crono. Those are the parts that will make hot wheels. But the "thing" that will make em hot is a sweet lacing pattern on the front wheel. Pick one here: http://www.terminalvelocity.demon.co.uk/WheelBuild/

I ride on Cane Creek Volos and I love them.

However, I don't think Cane Creek will sell the Cronos hubs except as part of an already built wheel.

$400 doesn't make much room for building "hot" wheels.

I'd go with black Surly hubs and a solid color Velocity Aerohead rim.

Niobium 30 rims
Sapim cxray spokes
Formula or Dimension rear track hub
Speedcific Perception front road hub (made by Formula)
alloy nips in front with brass in back

Use fewer spokes in the front than in the back. I don't know if these wheels are "hot", but they are well within your budget. Eight months ago, the parts cost me about $330 from oddsandendos.com., These wheels are light (about 1470-1570 gms, depending on spoke count and choice of rear hub), strong, stiff, and as aero if not more aero that anything else you can buy at that price. Unlike CC Volos, the parts are not proprietary, so truing, replacing broken spokes, worn bearings, or other repairs will cost very little.

Hint: you can shave off about $60-$65 by using a double butted round spoke instead of CXrays.

Aren't you moving to NY? There are plenty of people around to help you build them if you want to cut out the labor costs.

Good Luck!

I know....the bearings are a big PITA, but there's method to the madness of Surly hubs. Surly bearings can be adjusted as they wear, so you can basically ride them forever as long as they don't seize. Also I noticed the other day that the flanges are placed inward a little more than other track hubs. If you derail your chain, there is enough clearance between the cog and flange on the Surly hub that it won't jam your wheel. Its an absolutely brilliant design for use off the track.

thought about this exact build, or perhaps DT aerolites. i recall another thread where you mentioned stripping and polishing the rims— how'd that go?

150$ for da7600 hubs

That price surprises me.

I would have expected higher, but with a little research I see it as doable.

Over the past year I have built, on paper, several sets of wheels, including wheels with Dura Ace 7710 hubs.

Funny, 7600 hubs at one time cost more than 7710 hubs, and 7710 hubs run close to $200.

In any event, my versions of "hot wheels" usually run closer to $600 than $400, but I see jdms mvp's point.

I just reviewed my notes on my paper wheels, and I can build a set of wheels with DA 7710 hubs that weigh 1592g and cost, not counting labor, $508.

...surly hubs suck...

How so?

I have black Surly hubs on my winter Ice Bike, and they have gotten me through two very nasty winters without any maintenance or care.

They look nice, too.

I'd rather have black Phils, and I could have had black Phils, but I can't bring myself to put really nice parts on my Ice Bike.
