Ok, I'll admit I'm pretty ignorant here, but how do you do/measure sprints on rollers?

There are purpose built rollers for this sort of thing. They've got a display that looks like a clock where a competitor's "hand" moves around the clock as they go farther. I'm guessing they'll use that sort of thing.

On another note, I've never quite understood rollers with a fork stand.

Cool.

Is there extra resistance on these rollers? Everyone must use the same bikes, I take it, so if not this is more a leg speed contest, whereas real sprinting is about strength too.

Did I get that right?

I've never done one, but that sounds about right.

Found a picture of one of the goofy machines:

Yes, but finding one of those setups, hauling it around, or building one from scratch is not easy or cheap. These are three identical Kreitler 4.5" rollers with fork mounts with three identically setup bikes for the event. Each roller has a drum mounted magnet and sensor that pics up everything and with some electronic parts sends that to a lap top and to a projector so everyone can see. This type of setup is much more portable and more common these days.

The use of a fork mount roller setup is so ANYONE can do this. Many people can't ride rollers period. Also, when doing an all out sprint like this even a person that can ride rollers won't be as smooth compared to normal riding. Choppy pedal stroke on rollers can equal a crash.

Here is a picture of that setup that will be used @ the Blind Pig:

Probably something like this http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=9rpv2s9ky0s&feature=related

Looks like a cadence challenge. I would do it but it is to far for me to drive, either that or I am to out of shape and would embarrass myself.

Bean-Larsen announced the record time from a recent Traverse City competition as 17.804 seconds, which amounted to 207 rpms or 63.88 mph, he said. No one at The Blind Pig approached that time until Todd Hayes was able to put a roller hardware issue from an early heat behind him and take a second off the Traverse City time. Hayes would later lower the time to 16.547 in the semi-final heat, and went on to win the finals as well.

Impressive, would have been fun to watch.

It was! Todd was a bit of a ringer being a track racer with some of the records for his age group at Bloomer Velodrome. But, I will say he was super fast and could spin incredibly fast, not to mention he was twice the age of many racers. The word on the street is there have been some 53t chainrings ordered that should be in place by the Feb. 23 event so the records will probably be broken again.

I don't know where in Northern Michigan you are, but they will be returning to Traverse City at the Right Brain Brewery on April 11. Also, anyone else Indianapolis on March 1. http://hellyessprints.blogspot.com/

I am an hour North. I may come down to watch but would not participate due to the fact that I would embarrass myself. I would need a BIG hill and a fixie to hit those RPM's, and then I would need a pair of Knee replacements.
