Great Lakes - I fought the law... (WARNING graphic pics)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

And of course the law won...stupid gravity.

So I decide to ride to work this morning and proceed to spend 15 minutes gearing up for the cold temps. I'm out the door at 7:20 and my ride ends abruptly at 7:22 (which includes the minute I waited to get across the street). I hit a patch of ice and gravity took over from there. Went down so fast that I didn't even get my hands off the hoods. Landed face first and my sunglasses broke my fall. They also inflicted the most serious damage as they gouged a 1 1/2" gash under my right eyebrow. Three hours and six sutures later I left the ER and was headed home. Washed up and went in to work anyway. Right now I'm enjoying some Vicodin induced bliss. Here's the aftermath:

Call me a temp weenie if you will, but it's the abrupt and unexpected encounters with sneaky ice that keep me indoors until 40 degrees settles in on my neck of the woods.

Glad you're relatively OK.

Sweet! I request another shot in 2 or 3 days when that shiner hits it's prime! :)

That will give you time to come up with a secondary story about chasing Christian Vande Velde and you were just about to beat him in a 'Stop Ahead' sprint when ....

So how is the bike?

Bike's fine. It was my SS Bianchi San Jose and all it suffered was a scratched brake lever, some ground up bar tape (still 99% intact), and a broken zip tie on the cadence sensor (must've caught my foot on it when I unclipped ever so unceremoniously)

ER docs told me to stay off the bike and no running until the sutures come out in seven days, but I doubt I'll miss more than 2-3 days.

If your post had started with "I was riding over to this hot chick's house" instead of "going to work", it might be worth it. That looks nasty..hope it heals up quick.

Yeeeouch.

Hope you get better soon.

This actually reminds of a fall I had with my scooter back in 2004 on my way to work. So I worked about 2 miles away from the train station and like so every evening I was scooting back to the train on one of those http://www.xootr.com/xootr/images/scooters/roma-composite-1200.jpg

Well, I didn't pay attention to the road, hit a nice pot hole and over the handle bars I went. Face planted on the tarmac and the screws holding my lenses to the sunglass' frame went right into my eye brows flesh as well. Damn, that hurt. Kinda looked funny on the train of course with the blood crust on my eye brow and the scooter next to me. Ugh.

Guess you should start shaving the eyebrows along with the legs.

Glad to hear you will be left with nothing worse than a tiny scar. How about some 700c studded tires before you go out again ? (I still go down occasionally even with studs but there really is a huge difference on ice)

Wow...Jose..glad you're ok. You really did it up good. That is quite impressive. I can sense that whatever you do, you give it your all! Phooey on no running either...you'll be going crazy!

Normally I would be right there with on that sentiment, but with all the swelling above that eye it feels like I have 6-8 ounces of sludge moving around my face. It moves with me and sorta follows whatever position I put my head into. Its not at all unlike an old waterbed. Getting better already. I anticipate being on the elliptical Thursday morning, back on the commuter bike by Friday and out on the road bike this Saturday. Good times. :thumb:

Two more words: studded tires

Talked to the folks at Specialized today and they told me to go scratch. To which I replied that Rudy Project and Oakley both offer crash replacements so I would probably be looking their way for my next pair.
