View Full Version : Should Aero Bars be Lubricated?

I have Profile Air Stryke aero bars, the kind that are spring loaded and the arm rest flips up when not in use. I have noticed recently that the pin which holds the arm rest has started to work itself out of its position. So I banged the pin back in with a block of wood, , and everything was okay. Then, for no apparent reason, the pin broke, and my LBS had to order a new pin from Profile. My question is: should these pins be lubricated occasionally? Or would this increase the chances of the pin working itself out of its original position? I never have lubricated mine.

Those pins have been the source of a few threads, all about them working loose. Seems to me that there might be abetter way to secure the armrests than a roll pin, or maybe the pis need to be a little longer, and the ends need to be peened so they can't come loose.

I've had this problem with mine as well, and the hinge design is clearly the problem. Either the pin will work its way out or the springs will break. I had the pin work loose twice; the first time I took it back to the LBS and they replaced the hinge/armrest assemblies, but not long after that the pin on the left armrest came loose again. Finally, I wrote to Profile via the 'Contact Us' link on their website and received a call back from a very nice lady who confirmed my name and shipping address and said that newly designed assemblies are headed my way. I'm happy that they're making it right since I did enjoy using the bars, but I'm a little disappointed that they haven't announced a recall on these things to help those whose bars haven't come apart yet but very well might. As an aside, I noticed in two different places armrest assemblies lying in the road on the Houston to Austin MS-150 ride a little over a week ago -- apparently they flew apart and the riders either didn't notice or didn't care to stop and pick them up.
