Mountain Biking - Light, strong wheelset?

I know that lowering rotational mass, improves performance. I'm looking for a wheelset to help improve performance for under $300. My current wheelset came stock on my Trek 4000, so anything should be an improvement. How light should I go? Any suggestions?

How do I find how much they weigh? How light should I go? Should I get UST? I've heard of people having problems with the tubeless.

Are you running V-brakes or disc? The 717's you are looking at are about 420g each. The 717 is a good rim. The hubs should work but I would prefer ChrisKings but that would raise the price a bit.

Ive been looking at the same thing and dont know if this is a good idea but you can get some lightweight rims built at jensonusa for under 300$
I was checking out the weight of some rims and it seems the mavic 717 disc and the sun UFO disk seem to be the lightest at around 390grams
then you need the hubs, spokes, nipples and rim tape, and they build them for you. Just dont know how good a job the do.
I was bored one day and calculated how much it would all weight, and it came out to approx 3.5lbs. Using the thin double butted spokes, alloy nipples, and xt disc hubs.
I think using the sun UFOs it would come out to around 200 of course with the mavic it is more expensive. I also noticed that ust mavic rims run around 80$ so you can have them build you some tubless wheels for around 300 and not have to spend 500$ on ust wheels.
If im way off base someone please correct me, but it sounds good in theory. Again I dont know how well they build them, and your limited to the hubs they sell, etc etc.

that seems like a good deal. And I didnt mean to have custom built wheels in all instances of course. It just seems like it would be a cheaper path for UST wheels, if you wanted to use the rims they sell.

Well I personally know their wheel builder. He does very good work. I have not had any problems with my single tracks yet. ;)

They really do have good deals on custom built wheelsets. Buy the parts and jensonUSA builds them for free.

Does anyone have an opinion on these wheels? Do you think that they are less then 2000 grams?
