Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Lance Armstrong's Training Bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Except for the fact that, hey he's riding a fixed gear bike to train for ROAD RIDING, not track riding, nor for commuting purposes. I'm pretty sure if Lance was training for track, he wouldn't be on the road, and be booking time at the LA Velodrome. This is why he's more than likely riding similar if not the same crank length he does on his road bikes. For you and me, 165's and 170's are a lot better.
I wasn't commenting on Lance though, I was commenting on you saying "us street kiddies riding 165's and tallan than 5'9 are dumb".
I don't see how the miles per hour matters when I'm just talking about his usual cadence? There's a considerable difference between the spin of a track racer, and a grand tour rider in riding styles. Lance has never been a sprinter. You're not always full out race pace on training rides either, so are you saying he's slow? I'm just guessing on the gearing, but if he's keeping an average speed for an hour at 29+ mph, that's pretty quick.
I just put that for reference purposes, the mph thing. I think we can both agree it'd be a bad gear for overall road riding unless you're riding all flats. Judging from the bike setup, it doesn't look to be made for putting in long miles on varied terrain anyway.
If you know anything about racing bicycles, the vast majority of time trial bike cranks are longer than normal road bikes, in order to churn those giant (53-55 tooth+) chain rings. 180mm cranks are not unheard of.
For sure.

what's the deal with that stem?
Looks like a modern take on the tradtional "Major Taylor" stem.

it's another variation of the look ergo stem.

Assuming that's a Salsa Size-O-Matic, it's not meant for riding. At least, not for more than maybe a quick test ride. It's got those warnings all over it. We have an older version in the shop that doesn't have a 31.8mm clamp, so that's kind of a pain sometimes. It does have shims to take it down to various handlebar diameters though.
It's really, really useful when you're playing around with adjusting fit. But anyone jackass enough to ride one on the street deserves to have their teeth knocked out. Besides, I think it goes for like, 200+ dollars retail.

I'm just guessing, and I might be totally wrong, but I think you guys are missing the point about crank length.
I bet that bike is set up as closely to his primary race bike as possible, bars, seat, stem, measurements, and yes, crank length. I'd bet it's less about functionality for the street and torque then it is just having something that won't ride totally different fit-wise from his race bike.
Also, sure, he could probably get any crank he wanted from Trek/Bontrager/Shimano or any other brand and have it re-labeled, but that doesn't mean his mechanic doesn't already have five extra road cranks sitting around that don't have to be ordered and shipped and waited for.

That's a SRAM Powermeter crank, and that's what I'm saying.

I think everyone's ignoring the most fascinating part: the invisible kickstand. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Lance would be the first, but I would have bet my life we were at least ten years away from this kind of technology, even in its most nascent form.

I'm pretty sure in that video he's riding a Trek something or other, I read a something saying that Trek has a custom ss/fg for his shop, and that's it.
Actually it's a Trek Soho S, if I'm not mistaken.
I can't be a Trek Soho, which has a sploping top tube (his did not.) Lemond was owned by Trek at the time of the video.

it's not.
from what i remember from the old thread.
at the time it was a custom bike (as they were looking to mass produce)
for his shop mellow johnnys in TX.
What is it? I'm speculating.

I can buy that it's custom but it looks just like a 07 Fillmore and even has the Fillmore's stock wheels.

Semantics, but I think it is a Fisher Triton.
I don't think Armstrong would be caught dead on a Lemond.
http://hkfixed.blogspot.com/2008/04/lance-armstrongs-fixed-bike.html
Seems like the same bike. Fisher took the Fillmore and rebranded it when Lemond fell off the Trek empire. Hard to mistake a bike once you've owned it.

The Power Meter is made by SRM, not SRAM. Two very different companies.
And yes, his bike is clearly just a Fisher Triton that was done up custom for Lance.
Compare his to this:

need for that...I think it's funny how Lance pops up in a Mash vid and everybody thinks he's bombing Austin with a bunch of fixters, it's just a marketing ploy to push fixed wheels at MJs, the lamest shop in Austin next to Jack and Adams. Lance is working on a city wide smoking ban...umm we could use some bike advocacy, cars kill bikers, cigarettes just kill the people who smoke them. Frustrating, I live in a town with the most well known cyclist in the world and he doesn't do **** for the local bike scene except make money off it.
Doc_Holiday
02-07-09, 12:03 PM
Jtarver, maybe Lance is concerned with the whole smoking ban because he, oh I don't know, HAD CANCER. The LAF's primary goal deals with cancer, not bike safety in Austin. I guess in between raising millions of dollars towards cancer research and training for the TDF Lance doesn't have time to help your local bike scene.

He didn't get cancer from smoking. He had time to open a high dollar bike shop downtown. He dumped his girlfriend even though she had cancer. I see him downtown all the time with blonde co-eds. I played volleyball with him last summer. I think he has a bit of free time. People in Austin know what Lance is really about, we see the real him, being rude to doormen, driving the car Sheryl Crow got Foose to restore, polluting the water in his neighborhood... Think he's a saint all you want...We wish he would move back to Dallas with all the other elitists.

I think he dropped his wife before she had cancer. I'm not certain.
If I was a professional badass like he is, I'd probably open my own shop too. One way or another. He's the one with all they jerseys. I don't give two ****s how he treats you.

Really you were the only one that got personal, just because he is an amazing cyclist doesn't mean he has to spend every waking moment spreading biking in Austin. Maybe you should spend every moment spreading the bike scene and not flaming lance, cause at the moment you just look like a jerk from Austin
