Foo - What to see in Atlanta?

The lady and myself are coming down to Atlanta for Valentine's day, and have all Saturday to see the city. We're both very curious people, and tend to find small unique places and things to be fantastic. She already promised we could stop at a few bike shops (any recommendations on good ones to check out?) but what else is there? We're skipping the aquarium, and we've both been to the High art museum. Every city has its attractions the even the locals can't get enough of. What does Atlanta have that I should check out? -the stuff you can't just find on the internets....

I loved the Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta. It was waaaay more interesting than I thought it would be.

Plenty of hookers hang out on Peachtree St. after dark.


If you like Civil War stuff, there's Kennesaw Mtn. If you like mtb, there's the olympic course in Conyers. If you just want to hang out and have a beer, there's lots of places for that. Need more info on what interests you and your mrs.

If you want to dance, listen to or do Motown Diva karaoke, see the cutest dj’s on planet earth or just sit back, relax and watch fun and interesting people then take your girlfriend to Mary’s bar/club in East Atlanta.

You could visit Peachtree St, Ave, Blvd, Cir, Ct, Ln, Dr, Did I miss Any?

Eat at the Varsity downtown before you leave....in fact eat there 2 days before you leave. Awesome Chilli dogs...I like the Chilli Cheese dogs myself. 2 days before you leave, just in case there's a next day side effect.

Cirque du Soleil is in town and the show -- Kooza -- is one of the better ones that has been through town in several years. We've been going since Cirque first came to Atlanta in 1991 with “Nouvelle Experience", and this show while still not the best is easily in the top 3.

Coca Cola's museum is pretty cool and the CNN studio tour isn't too bad if you're into that kinda stuff.

We like to hit the small antique shops and small businesses in the historic districts in Marietta, Roswell where you can just kind of amble for a few hours and find a nice restaurant fairly close by (Shillings on the Square in Marietta and Swallow at the Hollow (BBQ) just off the beaten path in Roswell) to enjoy a leisurely meal.

Kennesaw National Battlefield Park is also nice and you can get in a pretty good work-out by taking a several mile hike up to the top of the mountain and the museum was recently redone and is quite good. The Southern Railroad Museum in downtown Kennesaw is another local attraction where you'll find "The General" ... a famous steam engine from the Civil War and a really excellent restaurant called the Trackside Grille.

Stone Mountain on the other side of town is also not bad. You can take the skyway to the top of the mountain and then trundle down and there are all kinds of attractions in the park with another funky small downtown area nearby where you'll find a couple nice restaurants.

This is all pretty low-key stuff for quality time spent with your S.O.

Little Five Points is one other area to check out and yes, you'll even find a pretty nice bike shop there called Outback Bikes. You'll also want to take a little walk around the lovely old homes in Inman Park adjacent to Little Five Points. Finally, Little Five points has all kinds of funky stores, little cafes and there are some other nice eateries just up the street.

If you go to little five points, Felini's has the best pizza.

The Thai Restaurant of Norcross is definitely worth the drive to the perimeter. It's on S. Norcross Tucker Road just south of Jimmy Carter Blvd in Norcross. Find it. You won't be sorry.

Rides, check out Kennesaw Mountain... it's a short climb, but you can knock out 10 repeats and get in a great workout... there's also a rail trail called the Silver Comet.. you can pick it up out in Smyrna... There is a lot of hiking up there, too.

Three words: World of Coke .... worth a trip for sure...

FWIW: You're looking at about 51 miles from the Capital in downtown Atlanta... About 28 miles further out than Kennesaw Mountain.

If you're looking for a road trip (2 hrs each way) and have any interest in motorcycles, you owe it to yourself to visit the Barber Motorsports Vintage Museum (http://www.barbermuseum.org/)near Birmingham, Alabama. For a Saturday visit you'd want to leave around 9 so you could be there by 10 (1 hr time difference when you cross the Alabama St. line) and plan to spend the entire day exploring the museum before making the drive back to Atlanta. It doesn't open until noon on Sundays.

Good thing it's your destination and not a layover - in which case, you'd get to see a lot of the airport. On your way out, expect to spend at least an hour on the plane before you take off.

Warning....the drive from ATL to Savannah is the most boring stretch of land to ever have a highway traverse it. Be prepared for 5 1/2 hours of boredom, with a good 3 hours spent searching for a radio station that actually has music.

I grew up in Atlanta...one thing I don't miss is people who are still fighting the Civil War...

there is a bicycle tour company in Atlanta called - da - bicycle tours of Atlanta. 404-524-1921. Make sure you bike thru the Krog St tunnel, and the mile long graffitti wall south of the tunnel.

That aquarium is by far the most awesomest thing in the world.

I like the silver comet trail.

I'm betting if Otto is still in Atlanta he's seen it all by now.

Haven't been to the aquarium yet. Shameful on my part.
