hey folks, i recently bought a pinarello online for a song. it still has some original campy parts, but mostly clunky suntour stuff. i want to upgrade the components to something lighter and a little higher end, but i do not have the specs to figure out what i can do with it. i would like to put an 8-9 speed cassette on it and a new bottom bracket along with some other stuff. does anybody know if this is even possible. thanks for your time,

if it's from '81 and you want to put an 8 or 9 speed cassette in the rear, you'll have to have the frame re-spaced. it's not a big deal, most shops will do it pretty cheaply. and the bottom bracket should be of the italian variety, and there are plenty companies still making them.
the only problem that i could see you running into is with the brakes. i'm not sure when companies started making recessed brake holes, but i know that most of the new model brakes are for recessed holes, and you're frame, being an '81, might not accmmodate them. no worries though, plenty of really nice "old school" brakes can be found online, or you could probably just keep the ones that are on there.
higher-end suntour components were (and still are) on par with record and dura ace, so i wouldn't thumb your nose at that stuff until you see how it performs. the cyclone and superbe groups were quite good. and the suntour "winner" cassette freewheel design was pretty damn cool for it's time.
good luck with your bike! i have an older pinarello that i recently put '03 105 9-speed on and i pretty much love it.
Mail your clunky suntour stuff to me and I'll send you a lovely 9-speed alivio hub.
