"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - For serious Time Trialists, what is a typical training week like? Tips to get faster?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi everyone

For some reason I've caught the TT bug, and it is something that I would like to pursue for the long term as a hobby. I like going fast, I find it an awesome challenge against myself and others, and I actually like the pain of pushing myself that hard...

I am a recent college grad (not rolling in cash) that spent about 6 months getting parts together to build up a time trial bike, and about a month ago I finally put it together. I raced it last weekend in a practice time trial with the UC San Diego Triathlon Club at Fiesta Island in San Diego. The course is pretty flat and uninterrupted, and I managed to finish the 12.30 mile course in 29:40 with an avg speed of 24.9mph.

For my first race on the bike, I am neither disappointed nor satisfied. I want to go faster. I've been riding for about a year now, and I have a big frame (6'5" 192lbs) so I know that physically I have much room for improvement.

So, for the serious time trialists out there, how do you train? How much intervals / base training do you do, and do you do it all on your TT bike? What is a typical week like? How do you incorporate your training into your work / personal schedule? How many TT's do you do per year?

For the sake of this thread, I would like to keep equipment-related input to a minimum. I am most interested in the training and mental aspect of time trialing for those of us who don't have all day, every day to train.

Other information: I do not train with a power tap and I prefer not to use a heart rate monitor. I do have a stationary trainer.

Thank you!
Ryon

Its all about FTP. Get a copy of Coggan and Hunter's book "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" from your library. Even if you don't train with a power meter, it is full of great training advice.

There is some awesome information in that thread, but I am most interested in how individual people on this forum go about preparing for time trials. Especially those of us who have full-time, non-cycling related jobs.
