Did you keep your other citizenship? I have extended my greencard last year since I didn't have my stuff together to plead my reason to keep my german citizenship.
But I will work on that in the next 9 years. :D

The anthem of the land of your birth is "Kde Domov Muj?" - "Where is my home?" I think you've found it.

Congratulations, my friend. As a countryman of yours wrote:

"The first and chief thing is that, thanks be to God, we are all well and liking it here very much. And why shouldn't we when it is so lovely and free here and one can live so much more peacefully and that is what I need. I do not worry about any thing and do my duty and it is all right. There are things here which one must admire and others which I would rather not see, but what can you do, everywhere there is something - in general, however, it is altogether different here, and, if America goes on like this, she will surpass all the others." - Antonin Dvorak, writing from Boston, MA, in 1892.

2009 is also the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. In October of that year, did anyone foresee the train changing tracks?

A friend of mine, Olimpiu, is from Romania, like the Czech Republic a country that lived for generations under the horrors of communism. Unlike the Czechs, the Romanian's freedom came with violence. My friend, a child at the time, told of being hidden in his parent's apartment to avoid being shot in the gunfire that raged in the streets. After the shooting was over he looked out the window and saw what he described as "a thousand white pigeons" filling the air. It wasn't birds, but the Communist literature every family owned. They were tearing it up and tossing it from the windows.

I'm glad the Czechs and Slovaks didn't have much gunfire, but I can imagine the 'pigeons' flew in the air there too.

In September 1989 I was finishing mandatory year in the Army - and I told this communistic leader, that their power is gonna end soon. You could feel a change was coming, but you wouldn't dream it would go so far.
Yes, Romania got it quite hard, there was a lot of killing. My nation is not too quick to fight - we could use some of the spirit of Polacs or Serbs, IMHO.

"My nation".... you mean Česká republika or the United States of America? Or perhaps both?

While on the subject, this is also the 70th anniversary of the West selling out the Czech Republic to Hitler. During the war, there was no doubt of the bravery and willingness to fight of the Czechs and Slovaks.

As you may be able to tell, I have great fondness for this little landlocked European country that I've never visited and have no blood ties to.

Thank you, Neil:) Yes, you can say they sold us, but we should have fought. It is important to fight, if for no other reason than not to give up. Finland is a great example here.

Me, too.

As the son of an Austrian, I have a keen interest in European history. The Hapsburgs did quite a lot of stomping around in the part of the world.

In my case, it's partly because of the country's history, but largely because I've loved Czech music since I was a child. It's hard not to like a people who took to Mozart as the Czechs did - the composer described audiences in Prague as "Figaro-mad" - and who wrote music that so wonderfully described their countryside:

The big 'tune' in Vltava, or, to use the German name for the river, Moldau. It's one of a set of six symphonic poems in Smetana's Ma Vlast ("My Country"). It's one of my favorite compositions, and when I read the post announcing ScrapMetal's new citizenship, I played a recording of the work in his honor.

Thanks, Neil, you make me blush:) Would you know anything about Janacek? This guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radoslav_Kvapil) was my neighbor growing up and he was particular on Janacek's music. I listened to his piano practice for about 18 years and it was great.

I know very little of Janacek's music, unfortunately. His work has been undergoing a revival for the past couple of decades or so, the operas in particular.
