Northern California - Henry Coe ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The ride is on for Saturday, February 28 at 10:00am!
Start at 125 Bernal Rd, San Jose which is very near to the junction of highways 85 and 101. The internets tell me there is a Starbucks somewhere in this shopping complex
Here's the route map: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Henry-Coe-revised
And cue sheet: http://www.bikely.com/cuesheet/route/Henry-Coe-revised
This is 57 miles and about 4800 feet of climbing according to Bikely. I haven't ridden any of it so if anyone has comments on the routing I'd appreciate it. The route follows Coyote Creek trail for a few miles which looks like a nice place to ride.
I will probably ride to the start and then take Caltrain home to make it another century :)

I did a ride with Western Wheelers a long time ago, starting from Almaden Park, up to the top of Henry Coe Park. We came up with 71.41 miles, and 6528 feet climbing ... here was our elevation profile:

Nice, that's pretty similar to my route except that it starts farther away and it goes in the opposite direction.
Looks good. Since you're down there I think you should add in some combination of Metcalf/San Felipe/Silver Creek. I would probably ride down from Fremont. But the ride back will be bad with the afternoon wind.

Doing Metcalf and San Felipe after the main loop was part of my secret plan ;)
Would headwinds on the way back be any less vicious doing the loop in a certain direction? Like is there more wind protection on one of long north/south legs than the other?
I'm thinking about the solo ride back to Fremont. Afternoon SW winds, but it might be okay during this part of the year.
Looks fun Ben. Actually Ron's route looks better for the tandem training we've been doing on the weekends. After this weekend the reservoirs might actually contain some water in them, too....

Now that we're closer to the Feb 28th weekend are any more people interested in this ride? I'm still planning on doing it but hopefully with more people than have replied so far ;)

I'd like to, but I suppose it would depend on what time we start: I have to be back in SF by 5:30 for a bday party that night.
Put me down for a "maybe". :)

Yes, I'd be interested in this ride. I would like to join you and ride to the start as well and I guess get my second century of February in (makes up for January's nil).
What time will we start in San Jose?

I'd want to start at 10:00 so that might be cutting it close for you Michael. I could also be willing to move this ride to Sunday March 1 if that works out any better (considering that I should get my February century the week before :D )
Also, this is the route I was going to take from my house to the start (35 miles): http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2540634
I plan on leaving home at 7:30am to make it to the "official" start at 10am. Chris you can meet me at my house or somewhere else along that route if you have a better suggestion.
bummer, i'll be out of town that weekend.. looks like fun =]

I'll be staying in Morgan Hill on the 28th and will be riding up to Coe sometime that morning. Need to be done at 11:30 though. Maybe I'll catch you guys on the way down.

Hey Ben,
Sorry but I can not make the ride on Sat. the 28th after all. I don't mean to "flake", but I have some activities in the city which I should tend to. My non-bike life is weak, so I got to cultivate it when I can.
As of now, Saturday's weather looks better than Sunday, but keep me posted if there is any rescheduling.
Pretty sure I am in for this ride. Weather looks promising.

Yeah I was thinking of rescheduling it too since there hadn't been a real strong response so far. I don't seem to be able to add a poll to this thread so we'll do it the old fashioned way. Anyone interested in this ride please indicate which options would make you more likely to participate:
1. Which weekend? I have listed those that don't conflict with Solvang centuries. The particular day would default to Saturday unless weather dictated otherwise.
a. February 28/March 1
b. March 7/8
c. March 21/22
2. Which starting point?
a. Original as posted (near junction of 85 and 101)
b. Almaden Lake like Ron's Western Wheeler's ride (near 85 and Almaden Expy)
3. Which direction?
a. Clockwise as originally posted
b. Counterclockwise

I'd prefer to do the big, group rides on Saturdays so that would be March 7 or 21 for me.
I'd still like to try and ride this Saturday, weather permitting, but just a little closer to home because of previous commitments. Anybody up for the standard OLH / Kings Mtn loop?

If I had my cycling legs, I'd be in this Saturday, but since I've been off for 2 weeks, I'd prefer c. Henry Coe kicked my butt last time, and I was in shape (at least I thought I was).

Dude you need to just get right back into the the hardcore rides.
I did that last week with Glen's ride. Throughout the ride, I felt like crap. I thought to myself maybe this was a stupid idea for my first ride back.
*BUT*
On the night ride last night, I felt better than ever. I attribute my good ride, to the ass kicking I endured last weekend ;)

3 - no preference
If you decide on this Saturday, count me in. I'll be out of town the following weekend, 3/7-3/8.
If you decide to re-schedule, I'm thinking about a Mt Hamilton both ways ride on Saturday if anyone wants to join me. (Start somewhere in San Jose, over Mt Hamilton to The Junction Bar and back).

Ok, so I'm in for something whether it's Coe or Hamilton. Who else is a definite in for a Saturday ride?

Doing *something* this Saturday...
Ruth can't ride Sat AM this week, but can ride Sunday. However, if it looks like the weather is going to suck Sunday... we may chose to ride Sat afternoon-ish.
If Sunday will be OK, I'll ride with Ruth Sunday, and do whatever on Saturday AM on the solo.

I'll definitely be doing Coe. I can meet anybody that wants to come along at the Specialized Concept Store on E. Dunne (just after Condit if you're coming from 101. East side of freeway) at 9:00. Can't do it any later because I have a 2:00 concert in Watsonville I have to get to.
C'mon Ramon, it should be epic up there with all this rain. This is the best time of year up there.
I'm in for Saturday, Coe or Hamilton. Either ride will be new for me, I've never rode up to Coe park or up the back side of Hamilton. Will have to map it out but most likely ride out from Fremont.

Donald you could always meet us in Fremont for this little ride:

You could tack on Calaveras/Niles Canyon to take you back to Fremont when we head towards Milpitas ;)

Okay the ride is on for Saturday Feb 28 at 10:00am!
It seems like no matter which weekend, some people wouldn't be able to make it so might as well just get it done on the planned day :)
After much pondering I decided to stick with the original routing (clockwise). This is because the wind is supposed to be coming out of the south on Saturday and I'd rather have a headwind on the MUP segment rather than on a long, straight, two lane road. Also we'll get the headwinds out of the way earlier in the ride.
I'm also going to modify the original route a little bit and bring it along Llagas Road which looks like it cuts through some small hills with big houses on them. I'll update the bikely from my original post.
So who's in? Ramon, Donald, are you riding to the start? If so, I am following this route (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2540634) from my house if you want to meet up somewhere along the way. I will leave home around 7am

This looks good, kind of like a reverse Mt Hamilton Challenge, can you ride on that stretch 84 east of 680? When do you plan to do it? March?

Cool, you live right by where I work. We're meeting at 10am, probably won't realistically hit the road until at least 10:15. Were you thinking of joining somewhere other than at the start? We'll hit E. Dunne road 15 miles into the ride so that should be 11:00 - 11:15am. This will be at Condit road, just east of 101 (there's a gas station there).
I'm in. See you at the official start at 10:00. I've never done this route as it's a little bit south of my normal territory. Looking forward to it.

Holy Crap! 40-mile side to the start. I'll probably Caltrain it back home.
Ben I'll try to meet you out there.
Here's my route (partially my commute... the Central Expy and DT SJ portions):

Yeah I'm almost certainly taking caltrain back. For me it will be 35 miles from home to the start, 57 for the ride, 12 back to San Jose Caltrain (or more if we do Metcalf), and then 2 to my house. So 106 total.
Marco, my version of the ride to the start is pretty close to yours except mine gets on the Coyote Creek trail at Tully Rd. and I take the trail down for 8 miles to Silicon Valley Blvd aka Bernal Rd. This route is only 2-3 miles longer than your version but might be a little slower (then again maybe not since there won't be any traffic lights).
Anyway our routes converge at Rengstorff and Central. Want to meet up there around 8:15?
What time do you think you will be arriving at Central Expressway and Mary? That's where I would be joining from.

That's 3 miles farther down the road from Rengstorff. Assuming I meet Marco there at 8:15 then we should hit Mary around 8:25 to 8:30.

We'll be in that neighborhood tomorrow on the tandem but more towards the reservoirs. probably do a santa teresa - bailey - uvas - mckean loop. Maybe our paths will cross along the way...From the NWS reports it looks like tomorrow AM is going to be the best riding weather this weekend has to offer.
