"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Anyone have any pre race rituals?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I ride around intimidating other racers saying "You looking at me?".

Oh man, after my race at Poor Kids last weekend I hit the "porta pottie" and my team mates looked concerned after I got out. Definitely need to have a pre race poop next time.

Yeah, I seem to have that one too. Weird, but it feels great afterward.
Right before a time trial starts I have an Enervit cheer pack. That stuffs like EPO.

Per peoples advice I'm going to eat more before my crit and not take in any calories during the crit and no more than a bottle of water.

Not necessarily a ritual, but I MUST have long finger gloves on when I race otherwise I feel naked.

I eat a few plain, untoasted bagels on my way to the race and one RedBull per hour. If I have two races in a day, I'll stretch and enjoy another bagel or two, if it's a hot day I can leave them on my dash and they'll be toasty by the time I come around.
::EDIT:: Sometimes I substitute the RedBull for a large cup of light roast coffee of the day from Carbiou; light roast has more caffeine in it, or so I'm told. I drink it black. I only drink black coffee before races and rides.

Not really.... I normally empty my bladder, eat a banana, pin on my number, have a chat, and then race. With crits I normally ride to the start so that's my warmup. Road races do require driving usually so everyone rolls around a bit on a side street before the start. I'm considering taking a trainer with me to road races this winter.

I'm totally random.
On Saturday's crit, I felt guilty because I only took an 8-minute warmup, averaging only 150W. It's hardly a banner crit warmup, but I attacked the gun and got things started off right. I felt great in no time.
Last year, for one crit, I hit a 5" power record during a 45 minute warmup, which was more than I'd planned to do. Still had great legs for that one too.
I dunno I just have confidence that whatever my fitness is, my body will work at its potential, regardless of what I do before the race.

Things like redbull are terrible, concentrated crap in a bottle.

I don't know if they would be as scary as my Enervit cheer pack or not. On the ingredients list there is something about crushed shells.

Hey do any of you guys have a warm up plan for on the trainer before my crit saturday? I have a video with a warm up routine from Vision Quest but I was wondering if any of you guys had any interval routine or warm up routine thats good before a crit. I know I need to go hard before my race on teh trainer.

So many of these posts make me wish that I was taking a bite of Filet Mignon while reading them (for the record, I prefer Sirloin)...
I rub one out, followed by a shot of tequila.

My only ritual is to get there early. Real early. I like to have plenty of time to check in, warm up, etc. If I get rushed, I get flustered and that's not good.

It's cool man when I was picking up my team kit this morning I found your order and paid a prostitute with the clap to walk around in your bib shorts for an hour.

More routine, less ritual.
Hate being late, but I ride my best races when I show up late (like, getting to the race and seeing my category warming up.)
Fanatical about packing car and NOT losing stuff.
And when I was announcing races regularly, I'd always ask the field "Anyone need to use the bathroom? Riders ready..." and pull the trigger.

Touche! Especially well timed since I left to pick up my kit right after posting that.
But out of curiosity, how did you know she had the clap? ;)

just as a handy aside, Assos saddle cream may indeed have antibacterial properties, but it's not strong enough to get rid of the clap. don't ask me how I know.
if it's a C or B race, I like to twist one up and play a little Marley for a while.

Funny you should say that. The most for-real offensive smell I've ever inhaled during a race is cologne. Dear God it's like 30x stronger when you're at threshold. I never could find the guy but I had to aggressively change position in the field b/c the smell was inflaming my lungs.
But back on topic. Why you gotta be hating? It's just a plant.
tonyzackery
02-09-09, 10:16 PM
Got no problem with the plant.
Got no problem with people smoking it.
Got no problem with people in races rubbing elbows with me.
I will have a problem with someone combining all the above.
