what's the difference between a 27" tire and a 700??

The numbers are different, here endeth the lesson.

700c is also know as 28" or 29".

but this only confuses the issue. go figure.

the size

700c rims have are smaller in radius by 4 mm. Tubes are interchangeable (assuming valve-holes match; although typically 700c uses presta and 27 uses schraeder) but tires are not.

i went to Sheldon Brown's (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html) site on tire sizing, and i'm more confused...

the 26" rims on my Surly are 559mm
when talking about a 700 rim, is that the ISO size, is it French sizing, or what???

is a 700 a 622mm or 587mm?

700 is french; 622 is ISO.
