I've been getting irritated by the recent rattling, thunking sounds coming from the drivetrain. I swore to myself up and down that it was just the BB, and I would replace it when I could. HOWEVER, I just looked at it more closely, and it turns out that it is the chain landing on the rear cog. I am using a BMX chain, and it has gotten worse since I switched from the XTR chain to the BMX. Do you think that my chain is too slack?

My first guess would be your chain line. The only time my chain makes noise from tension is when its too tight. Are you on a fixie or a ss?

SS. How much is it to re-dish a wheel?

Not sure I do my own work. If you were local I would do it for you. I would guess at aroun 10$ maybe 20$...not sure. Its not difficult to do. Read up on Sheldons site. That's how I learned.

XTR - 3/32"
BMX = 1/8"

Sounds like your cog is a 3/32".

The chain works perfectly in both the rear cog and the chainring, so that isn't the issue. I looked at it, and the BMX chain engages in a better fit than the XTR chain.

maybe it just needs some grease?

I had a weird problem like that and it was the freewheel. New freewheel and sound was no more. It was very intermittant and annoying.
