Cyclocross - Past cx'er

Does anyone remember Lawrence Malone? He was a cyclo cross racer of some note, having competed at the world's in the 70's 80's. He was in the cycling papers for bunny-hopping some low barriers! He lives in Santa Fe, N. Mexico now. I raced a few cx's in California, and was a road racer myself. I remember him at some road race events, and when I saw him in front of a pharmacy in Pojoaque, I said to him " Is that a cyclo-cross bike"? He said yes,and then I asked him if he ever competed. He said "Yeah, I raced a few times". I told him I raced a few myself, and if he ever heard of the Sorrento race in California. He said "I think I won that one a few times". I said "I raced it twice, and finished both times, but I never placed. What is your name"? He told me who he was, and then asked me my name, and he told me "Oh, you were on Gibby Hatton's team. I remember you. You had a wicked sprint. I always envied you sprinters. I could never figure out how you guys could go so fast!" Well, we talked for a while,and I told him I remembered him very well. I heard all kinds of stories about his eccentric lifestyle. Does anyone remember some stories about Lawrence Malone they would care to share?

no stories, but one of the vets on the group ride was talking about this guy today. Weird

Lawrence Malone. It's a pity not many CX-rs know of him. CX is an obscure genre of cycling, at least here in the USA. In Europe, it is popular. Anyway, Lawrence Malone was one of the few Americans who was of World Class ability. He was a road racer as well, but excelled on dirt. He was National Champion, and went to The World Championships, where he gained popularity with the European tifosi, because he had a colorful personality, and wild riding style. He would do BMX bunny hops over obstacles, and the crowd loved it. I have some stories about his past, which are pretty cool, if anyone wants to hear them. I love cyclo-cross, and I would love to get personal witness race reporting from someone, on the current events, and rider profiles. It would do modern CX'rs good to research Lawrence Malone's accomplishments, and what he contributed to American Cyclo-cross.

I think he was the first to bunnyhop barriers in Europe and they used to call it "a la Malone".

Malone came up on a ride a few years back as we were talking about the suckiness of flared drops. Apparently Malone had a favorite bridge in Santa Fe that he would use to custom flare his drops.
