Hello! I'm new to this board, but have been viewing and searching posts the last few days since I purchased a new bike and am trying to learn about some of the many newer pieces of equipment, etc. Last week I picked up my new Felt SR71 bicycle. This is my first new bike in many, many years. I've had it out just a few times and am getting familiar with it and am enjoying it very much. I don't know if my riding does it justice, but the more I'm on it the more comfortable I find myself with it.
Tonight after walking the bike through a crosswalk I got back on and quickly caught my shoelace near my right pedal. I was able to release it without much difficulty, but when I got back on my bike I found that the chain slipped completely off the chainring (the smallest of 3). I was close enough to home so I just walked the bike. Now I'm wondering if I should try to put the chain back on myself or wait until the next day or so and have the LBS do it. I purchased bike shoes, but need to have the cleats put on them and fitted to the bike (so I was told). The slippage wasn't mechanical, just a freakish thing with the shoelace. I hate to cause an actual problem in trying to fix it myself as I don't know if there is a "trick" to getting it on the chainring without distorting it. Also the bike shoes I purchased have ties and now I'm wondering if it's safer to have shoes with velcro so this thing doesn't happen once I start using clipless shoes (my first time). I've been try to pysch myself up on going clipless after reading there is the possibilty of not clipping out in time and this happens wearing my Nikes! If a chain slips off is it ever a good idea to put back on yourself and how?

All you have to do is grab is so its not caught on anything like the chainring, pull from the bottom which will pull the derailleur and let it go back onto the chainring. :)

Yep, It might also be helpful to shift the front derailer to whatever chainring you place the chain back on ( most likely the smallest) before you actually put it back on. It will be pretty difficult to break or mess anything up.

Thanks. Did as suggested and took the bike out tonight and everything is working fine. Probably is a simple problem to most, but since it's a brand new bike I didn't want to throw anything off.

How do you like your bike? Have you taken it on any longer rides? I'm asking for opinions on the aluminum frame/carbon fork combo.

Thanks,

Warren
