I have just taken off my wheel to replace my tube. After placing my rear wheel back into it's position, I tried to pedal and notice that when I pedal in reverse, the chain gets a lot of slack. It's as if it has become a fixed gear? Help pleased!
OK, I'm assuming you have a derailleur equipped bike.
Is the chain on the same cog the derailleur is lined up to? Pedal it forward a few turns to allow the chain and derailleur to get in sync.
Did you mangage to bump the derailleur during the wheel removal? Re-check your cable tension adjustment.
If it won't freewheel at all, then you probably have a problem with the freewheel mechanism, it will probably respond to being flushed out and given a light lube

I'd check the jockey wheels on your derailleur. Did you thread the chain through them correctly?

Check the angle of the derailleur's two pulleys (wheels, tension-roller and jockey). Are they in the same plane as the rest of the bike's centerline? Or are they angled by comparison? If they are angled (probably inwards), you have a bent hanger. Depending on your frame, this may be fixed by bending it back to where it belongs. Or by bending it's derailleur-hanger. Or even replacing the hanger, depending on how off it is.
Rather than going BONSAI! and bending it too far (each time it's bent, it becomes structurally weaker) and having to bend it back, you might want to let your LBS do this for you. If you are good with tools - have at!
It could also be that the chain needs, or wants to lose, a link or two.

Hum, so I just left it for yesterday and I rode it around the block today still in the same manner it was. It seemed to fix itself and works fine. The chain no longer rotates when I backpedal. Any ideas of what might have happened? I did no adjustments to the derailer or anything :)
