Commuting - Sometimes I even amaze myself (long)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Bizarre day to say the least. A friend offered me $50 to help him throw cement this morning. $50 for an hour an a half of work no problemo. So, I showed up when the cement was suppose to get there. It wasn't there yet, so we sat around. My commute from the area has been about 1:40. I've done better, and I've done worse. So, when the cement did show up I figured I had a little time to play with, not much.

We started throwing shovel fulls of cement from wheelbarrows. And the temp started getting hotter. We got the hard part done, but I looked at my watch and I had an hour and 45 min to get to work. Said good bye, downed the last of my liter of water and a Powerbar, and headed out.

I've discovered a new route to work that is 25 miles. 10 of it is rails to trails, paved and sometimes busy with every body and their brother. I had a SW wind, that was almost a head wind, and I stomped on the pedals. I didn't have time to mess around with the wind and people. I did my best against the wind, and had another Powerbar on the way and kept with the circles. The three hills I had to climb had the wind at my back, but before I got to them the elastic went out on my legs. It wasn't a bonk, it was rubber legs from hoisting shovels of cement, and my arms were sore as heck, I kept moving my hands around looking for the position that would be pain free, nothing worked, and time was slipping by. By the time I hit the convenience store I stop at to get water and a snack for work my feet were numb my arms hurt to bend them and I could barely get off the bike, and I had 3 more miles to get to work, but I'd made good time.

I got to work, but I was dogged, I was able to clean up and be at my station in time to start the shift, but I was suffering from (my clients call it a Chinese disease) Dragon Arse. I had done the ride in 1:32, at an average of 16.1 mph, on a fixed gear, in a cross wind, after an hour workout throwing cement to build five stair front portico in temps pushing 90 degrees, to top it all off I was sun burnt as well. I still had a 20+ mile ride in front of me home, with that same SW wind. Sometimes I get a bright idea, tonight I asked for a ride halfway home, so my commute home was only 9 miles. I ache, my legs are still like rubber, my arms aren't any better, my legs, face, and hands have that dull soreness from sunburn. My friend is suggesting I might want to finish the cement work on Friday, there's more.

There is one thing I wish I could have tonight, or sometime tomorrow, a friggin' massage, god that would make it all worth while. Until then sitting in front of the fan with a bottle of water watching tapes of last year's Vuelta A Espanna, with some pasta salad is going to have to do.
