Winter Cycling - Took off my studs

Here in the South half of Illinois the temps have risen above freezing and I took off my Nokian M+G's. What a relief! I'm now running Continential Town and Country tires. They are big and fat but they have low rolling resistance. There are still a few icy spots so I have to be careful. I was on the local trail today and I came upon a man who had just wiped out on some wet/icy leaves.
Winter isn't over for us but I figure the hard freeze is done with. I could always remount the studs if things cool off again. For now I'm enjoying the speed.

i quit using studs a month ago. we havent had much snowfall and the roads have been crisp and clean for a while. i still ride on knobbies though. ice is easy to spot and not all that bad, my studded tires didnt perform well anyway, they werent the most expensive though

Yep studs are off here too. Might have to remount them before warmer weather finally sets in for that freak early spring snow storm.

Took the studs off Saturday (3 days ago). Now the forecast say snow on friday:eek:! Oh well. Just gotta switch them out and ride a little noisy for a day or two!:D

Mine are off but easily accessible. Still a lot of winter left. It is nice riding stud free but i did enjoy them for a couple of ice storms.

At least a month on two bikes. I've learned to keep 'em on until the ground (in the shade) is no longer frozen. As long as it is any moisture hitting it can freeze and send you ass over tea kettle.

Studs are still on my mountain bike so I can still ride 'em if I have to.

I'm pretty lazy so I just leave them on until Tax Day (4/15), since we're likely to get snow and ice up until then.

I went to the LBS two years ago and picked up a cheap set of rims and mounted my 294's to those. So if the weather changes. It takes me 10 mins to switch wheels.

I then bought a marathon winter for just the front tire... that thing is awesome... it's really not that slow and beats the #@!*& out of falling down... (last week a guy wiped out right in front of me riding just knobbies on his mountain bike, he was taking a corner way to fast....)

Here in southern Michigan I switched my Nokkian 296's out for my regular tires last week and enjoyed a few days riding without having to worry about snow and ice. I woke this morning to a winter wonderland. Will probably slap the Nokkians back on tomorrow to be ready for Monday's commute. I'm not complaining (well perhaps a little, but riding in snow is better than not riding.)

1+ I had reservations about studded tires because of increased rolling resistance, which I now think is negligible on the Marathon Winters. My routes are pretty well-tended, but I'll still keep the studs on through March at least. Right now the streets are fine for my road bike, and my mountain bike is reserved for any wetness, besides ice and snow.

There's no way I can take mine off for another few weeks. Here's what it was like in the woods near my house yesterday:

Yeah, here on the West side of WI, I took my studded tires off a few weeks ago. But put them back on this morning. We got snow again, horayy......

i bought innova tires. i should have bit the bullet and bought some decent ones. the studs were f***in ground down to nothing in less than 3 months

We still have a couple of months left of stud-season.

Was just thinking about taking the studs off this past weekend ---- and then the temp dropped and we've been getting 25 sustained and 30-40 mph gusts - and when I rode home last night - was dam glad to have had the studs still on --- nothing like getting a big gust of icy wind trying to blow you over and you look up and see the a huge stretch of road completely iced over..... I think their going to stay on a bit longer ...

My studs stay on year-round...I have 5 other bikes with non-studded tires to choose from when the roads are not snowy and icy. :D
