OK - since the 1st ride in the series was such a success, #2 is now in the planning stages and will be held on the weekend February 21/22. Preliminary planning is for the ride to start in downtown Danville, go out to Amechi's Pizza in Dublin for lunch, and return. Mostly suburban riding on wide Blvd's with good bike lanes, and minimal/moderate climbing. Figure about 25-30 miles or so.

****NO drops, frequent regroups, and fun for everyone - guaranteed.****

Before I pick Saturday or Sunday, a quick poll is in order. Let me know via the poll which day works best for you, and that's when we'll roll. I'm leaning toward Sunday, myself, but who knows - maybe I'll listen to your pleadings. :)

****Poll closes in four days****

PROPOSED ROUTE:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Amechi-s-Loop-Danville-to-Dublin-back

I'm going to call an 11am start time, to allow a good peek at the weather and to let it warm up some. Meeting place is behind Peet's Coffee in Downtown Danville, 435 Railroad Ave.

02/21/09 The latest forecast says definite rain all day Sunday. This ride is

Are you bringing your camera to catch more candid shots? ;)

I'm surprised to see that there are so many CAT4 women that they have two groups. Girl power!

Oh, and I vote Sunday and hope cgallagh can make it so it's a tandem event.

I'm in for Sunday.

I'd be coming on BART, I assume getting to Danville from BART is pretty easy?

About 10 miles of flat ground from Pleasanton, or about 6-7 miles of flat ground from Walnut Creek BART. I didn't consider BART accessibility, so I can shift the start some to make that work better if there is a need for it. :)

Keep trying to get some rides in, between the rain squalls. I'll try to make it out for whichever day has the best weather ;)

I went for a ride a week ago and managed to keep some serious pace, I guess keeping on the stationary in the offseason kept me from getting TOO out of shape...

Sounds like a basis for a mutually beneficial negotiated result: "Look, boss, since I'm covering you on Saturday, you can cover me on Sunday. Deal?"

How can he refuse? :thumb:

Now all we have to do is get the weather to cooperate.

Oh, come on. No one is going to be interested in that kind of ride. . . . :p

My vote is the same as the guy announcing Wrestle-Mania: "Sunday, Sunday, Sunaday."

BUMP - those voting in the poll clearly prefer Sunday, February 22nd, so that's that.

Here is the proposed route in Bikely (BTW - how big a piece of ***** is Bikely - damn!). :crash:
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Amechi-s-Loop-Danville-to-Dublin-back

Looks to be about 30 miles even, with about 1700 feet of climbing all told - mostly an accumulation of rollers, some sustained sustained +1/2% grades (going up Sycamore), and a decent hill (Windemere Parkway) on the way back.

I have the route starting//ending in the Parking lot behind Peet's Coffee in Danville, but I'll probably move it up a road a little bit to the Navlet's parking lot at the corner of Sycamore and Camino Ramon, because that's where Amechi's is located. I just want to take a look first and make sure we can park there without aggravating the businesses there.

Let me know your thoughts, and if there is a need to make this a more relaxed, flatter ride I can modify it with ease.

Looks like fun. I should have no trouble whatsoever being the "sweeper" for this ride. :D

I can't commit for sure, but I'm going to try and make it. So far I'm 1 for 1 (batting 1000, which is roughly 987 points better than my little league batting average!).

Just be sure to order up some nicer weather this time - I actually got damp last time! :p

That's because Bikingshearer planned that ride. My rides are always green grass and high tides forever.

But rain cancels. :D

No need to modify your route it is fine for the "big kids" but my crew needs a little less.
So, I chopped a few miles off on this "lite" version of the route (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Amechi-s-Loop-Lite)

We start with everybody else but we then we will roll down the Iron Horse as a warm up for the kids, this saves a few miles.

We will then meet up with the group and resume your route where Iron Horse crosses Dublin Blvd.

Cell phones should make the timing of the meet up easy.

That's a very good route, and one variation I was planning to use - but I didn't want to flood the MUP with a big group.

Gary

We can shoot for a 10am start time (or at least marshalling time :)). It is a 30 mile ride, so however long it takes you to ride 30 miles and then have some pizza with your forum buddies..... (I wuz gonna say BF buddies, but that sounded all wrong. :D )

I'll park in Walnut Creek, ride over the mountain, and meet y'all in Danville. *pretends to be hardcore*

Is the pizza at mid point or end? Are you planning on doing a roll call?

After the ride, would you advise me on how to fix up my craigslist purchase? I'll bring the bike to show you. That's if I can make this ride of course, which I can't. ;)

this ride sounds fun. ill probably stop by and check out the ride pending on weather.
the route seems very mellow. but then again that always depends on the pace.

out of all the times i ride to dublin from danville i must admit i have yet to take sycamore from dublin blvd.

Yes, yes, yes, and too bad. :D

Actually, the weather looks pretty dicey on the forecast. This ride might well get cancelled.

What's the avg speed on these rides?

bigbossman
02-18-09, 12:19 AM
What's the avg speed on these rides?

Whatever you want it to be. Somewhere between 11 - 15 mph for most folks, I'd guess. Guaranteed no-drop, guaranteed re-groups.

Can't lose, and we're swell folks to ride with... :D

bikingshearer
02-18-09, 12:25 AM
What's the avg speed on these rides?

Hard to say, but the Bossman and I can promise that neither of us will ever be mistaken for Eddy Merckx. On a ride like this, I'll probably average 13-17ish mph on the flats wind being a big variable), 4-7mph on the hills depending on how steep they are. Bigbossman is faster than I am, but not a huge amount.

If you are worried about the pace, don't be. The whole point of the "B&B Slowpoke Series" is that we won't drop you and we won't leave you behind. C'mon out. Unless it rains. If it rains, bigbossman and bikingshearer turn into total slug-a-beds. Separate beds, though.

Yes - weather forecast calls for heavy rain starting Saturday and continuing through Sunday. I think this ride is going to get posponed/cancelled due to weather.

We can play it by ear, but for those of you with other things to do - don't hang your hat on this one.
