I am considering buying a condo in Tampa St Pete area near water and
the Bay Pines VA Hospital. Is this a good location for bicycling. I
hope to not drive at all. Any recommendations on specific locations??

The Pinellas Trail runs thru the entire St. Pete area all the way to Tarpon Springs with bridges over the main highways. http://www.pinellascounty.org/trailgd/ The trail is probably not the best for fast cycling as a lot of pedestrians use it also, but you are seperated from the cars. We rode the entire length up and back one weekend and had a good time. As for the rest of the area, it is similar to the rest of Fla, some bike lanes, lots of old people in giant cars and the regular crazies.
Pretty good, actually. You'll be right by the Pinellas Trail, so you can take off north to Clearwater, Dunedin or Tarpon Springs, or south and east to downtown St. Pete. The trail goes right by a big shopping center about a mile away from Bay Pines, two miles to the Tyrone Mall, and you could throw a rock and hit a grocery store from either. Go north two miles or so to Bicycle Outfitters (http://www.bicycleoutfitters.net/). (No interest, just bought a few things from them and found them to be reasonable and personable. Don't forget to scratch Mabel behind the ears!)
Cross the Madiera Beach causeway, (WALK your bike across the narrow catwalk for 50 meters!), and you're on the beaches... almost solid bike lane for 20 miles south to the tip of St. Pete Beach.
If you want a "neighborhhod loop", War Veterans Park is adjacent to Bay Pines VA, and at the back of the park is a .8 mile loop that if you ride clockwise has no stops, and there is virtually no traffic back there.
What else you need to know?
