Tomorrow will bring a total of 14 days since I last went out for a ride. April 16th was my last day on the bike. I got stuck with some mandatory work training (5 days) starting on a Saturday and then had to fly to out of town as my Father-in-Law passed away. Way too much food, you know how it goes, everyone bringing meals for you...nothing low fat! But boy was it good.

Back home to work, caring for my daughter as my wife was still with her family, rain and big time winds.

No time to get on the bike.

The good thing is that during this time my weight held fairly stable only gaining a few pounds. Quite amazing considering the food I ate during this time.

Anyway I am so anxious to get out. Today is my really first normal day since the 16th. It will be real interesting to see how my stamina and speed will be on that first ride...weather permitting tonight or tomorrow.

I feel your pain. I just placed an order for a rear wheel trainer for those reasons. Between working long hours and needing to help out with my 1 y.o. son when I get home, it leaves precious little daylight for some riding, especially since I get home usually about 6 or 7. For me, riding in the mornings is not an option because I get to work at 0600. With the trainer, I will be able to be in the house, listening to the baby monitor while my wife gets some needed "mommy time" at the gym while I get a ride in. What I have done a lot is go for a quick (half hour) run instead of a ride. Good luck with your first ride!

same boat here. although i don't have a family, and probably can't hold a candle to you guys, i find it hard to work a full time job, commute 2 hours everyday, feed myself, etc... and still ride enough. when i work and ride and do everything else required of me the entire day is shot. this is sad. . .

Ditto here. Something must be in the air. I couldn't wait until Daylight savings time so I can get more biking in and it seems like the last few weeks have been too hectic to get out unless I want to ride at midnight

My season got a really late start due to having surgery, so I wasn't able to get on the bike until this past week!Just in time for me to get to the 'all clear' from my doctor, we had horrible weather- cold, rainy or windy. And now, when we get nice warm weather, it's always accompanied by gale force winds- like yesterday! It was 25C but the winds were gusting up to 80k! Finally I got out today, and tomorrow it's supposed to be windy like it was yesterday! Mostly it's the weather, nearly impossible to get one decent day! It can really suck this time of year.

I'm also having problems with 'real life' getting in the way of a good ride. We're in the process of selling our house and having a new one built, so there's been a lot to do to fix up the old place and manage the construction and financing of the new one. Add to that the iffy weather we tend to get in the spring and my wife working night shift and it's a miracle I get any riding done at all. Things should improve somewhat once we get in the new place and everything gets settled -- just a few more months and all should be good.

To you folks with the kids, why not take them riding with you when you are looking after them? You may not get to do your normal rides but at least you will get out for a ride.

"i can't believe i'm helping a redwing fan. go calgary!!"

Ouch that hurt...especially after today!

Well I'm back in my routine again. I was able to ride the last 2 days. The weather still sucked but I enjoyed it anyway. I was seriously thinking about putting the bike back on my trainer, but I really wanted to ride outside.

The same problem here - work and family restrict outside biking. No to mention weather. The trainer is a great alternative, although it is tough to do an hour starting at 9:30 or 10 pm.

The light idea (for dusk and after dark) is a good idea, but not suitable for the roads around here. I really like riding singletrack on my mtb at night. It is just me and the bears out there.

I've been seeing a lot of people saying the same thing. I saw one guy I know to be really hard core. This was yesterday, and he said it was like his first real ride of the year! ALso, he does downhill, and races but says this year he's not bothering. Part of it seems to be the s*** *y weather, almost no one is able to get out much. And other life problems, myself included. However, I make the effort to get out when possible or I'd go insane!
