More than once recently I've seen rim tape that's made more of thin plastic sheeting than the standard cloth tape. This newer "tape" has small hemispherical depressions over the nipple holes in the rim. It lifts off of the rim easily, but it also causes serious problems: flats. I don't know how many flats I've seen caused by the tube expanding into the little depressions and having its surface overstretched.

I've seen this tape on more than one road wheel with a Ritchey hub. Specialized had its name imprinted on the tape in at least one case, but I've seen just plain yellow rim tape of this type.

What is going on with this stuff? Is it lighter than standard cloth tape or something? I don't understand why this tape would be put on bikes deliberately. Every time I see this I recommend the rider buy the standard cloth tape.

Anyone else see this?

Yeah, I've seen it too! Mostly on wheels that come on bikes. Michelin makes it and other companies too! Michelin is the only one that comes to mind. I've seen light blue, yellow and white. I also suggest replacing them with cloth tape.

Velox has been a favorite for years, just started using some from Zefal that seems identical. I've seen some cloth tape in Red, I can't remember who made it, but supposibly lighter that Velox.

I guess the switch is due to economies, I'm sure those plastic ones are cheap, cheap, cheap! I'm sure they'll claim it's to reduce rotational weight, but I'll sacrifice the difference in weight for the durability of cloth tape.

Agreed! The otherwise upscale SunTour/DT/Ritchey wheels on my 1988 mountain bike came with plastic Michelin strips, which I of course replaced with Velox. Even at $3 per roll, I cannot afford not to use it.
