I'm taking a long weekend with my wife and a friend next weekend and was wondering how safe the ride is from Austin to Fredericksburg (Enchanted Rock). I've driven a route before but I never had it in mind to ride it at the time since we live in Dallas. We're planning on sport climbing Saturday at Reimer's Ranch (near Dripping Springs), they're taking Sunday off to recover and heading to Enchanted Rock for trad climbing Monday and Tuesday. I had the idea of riding from Austin to E-Rock on Sunday since it is only about 70 miles.

So... has anyone ridden this before? Is it safe? I'm aware of 290 going out there, but I think 71 turns West and heads out to Llano, then connect to E-Rock from there. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance (I'll try searching as well)
