So I brought my bike in the hallway of my apartment building last night to let the gears properly dry out from all the salty slush on the roads..

A couple of hours later I heard what I immediately thought was perhaps a 9mm gunshot, not too likely in my neighbourhood -- so this morning when I bring up my bike it turns out the tire has exploded. Obviously it resonnated pretty well in the bare concrete hallway and staircase...
This happened to me previously with the same tire, but that was while inflating it and probably the tube was squeezed between the tire and rim.

Anyway, it turns out the tirewall has been torn off the bead at one point, rendering the tire useless. The tire seems flawless otherwise.

I bought the Nokian Hakkapeliitta W240 less than two years ago, and have put about 1 season's worth of use into it.. Thus it is within the limit of the stated warranty.
IMO I haven't mistreated the tire in any way, and I've been pretty cautious riding the bike. Recommended pressure is 65 psi, I had mine at 60 psi.

Would you judge this a warranty issue?

Did you put any talcum powder on the tube before installing the tire? Winter tires are a pretty sticky rubber, and when inflating, their is alot of friction between the tube and the tire, which can cause blowouts like you describe. If you load it up with baby powder, you shouldn't have a problem.

As for the warranty, call the company you bought it from, as calling Nokian directly may be near impossible.

perhaps you had the correct amount of pressure in the tire outside and when you brought it inside the air expanded and blew out your tire.

happened to me once

Lebowski: Pumped them up in +8'C ... it was probably -6'C outside when I moved it in to about +15'C.. it shouldn't really matter.

Anyway, I walked in at the dealer today after giving them a call, and they replaced the tire with a brand new one, no questions asked. Very well handled by them and I ought to be giving them some more business.

asmallsol: Thanks for the reminder. I didn't use talcum. I will however be using it from now on.. I even think I will dismount the tires and just liberally apply talcum powder to tube and tire.

Yep. I normally do not either, although have always heard it was a good idea. When I put my nokians on, I blew two tubes up during or right after the first time blowing it up. Applied talcum powder and it went without a hitch.
