Living Car Free - big butt so what

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

so I just wanted to verify a suspicion i've had for years. i've been living car free for about 4 years now and i noticed that my waist has shrunk but my pants don't fit. in addition to my trousers being tight at the thighs they are also constricting me about 2 inches south of the waist band. so my thought is that biking makes your butt larger. any opposing theories or confirmation would be welcome.
But it's all muscle baby!
:D
Biking works your glutes. Anybody who rides a lot will end up with increased muscle mass in certain key places.

I've never noticed muscle soreness there like I get on the front of my legs, maybe my pedal stroke is all wrong? Bikers don't seem to have big butts in general.

Normally I see runners with big butt muscles and cyclists with bones ones. I think it depends a lot on your riding style. Your main butt muscles are only working when your leg is slightly behind you during your step so if you are a more recreational cyclists then I doubt you work that out too much. However, if your a racer or roadie with clip ins and doing a lot of standing/circle peddling then I could see it. I already had a huge butt before I started cycling so my opinion is open to debate since I lack any quantifiable evidence.

This thread is useless without pics.

Ride more in the handlebar drops and you will use those glutes and perfect your butt. You'll also have more power. The downside is that, for an old codger like me, you'll likely have a stiff neck and a rash from running your face into the handlebars.

I've also been car free for about four years. I ride and walk almost everywhere I go, up and down pretty steep hills. As for the characteristics of my butt, all I can say is that I'm pleased to report that cycling on a daily basis has improved them. Any more info than that is probably more than anyone wants to know.
