I just had to share....it's payday so I splurged and had a sushi lunch today at my favorite local sushi shop. If you're ever in Portland: Restaurant Murata 200 SW Market Street. It's very traditional, I'd guess Mr. Murata and his wife are in their 60's, they're both really nice and Mr. Murata makes some absolutely devastating sushi!!! YES!!! I'm one happy camper right now! :)

Oh god, I'm SO jealous.
There's nothing I like better than like an epic ride followed by hot saki, a boatload of sushi and a good night's sleep.
Well, maybe one thing.
P.S. What's your favorite sushi? I'm a big kaibashira fan.

Toro and uni sashimi is where it's at. You'll go broke eating good toro, but damned if it isn't worth it.

You would've fit in very well with the Japanese that I used to work with. I couldn't tell if they liked the uni because of the taste, or just that it was the most expensive stuff on the platter. Give me maguro, ika, yellowfin, etc., but I'll pass on the uni.
I'm with you on the toro, but uni is an acquired taste - very popular in Japan, I know - but which I haven't quite developed...I also very much like hamachi and maguro tuna and Murata has some great lightly smoked sake (salmon). I like variety and will also go for the mackerel, eel, scallops and shrimp, among others.

Fugazi Dave-
There is an very tasty, inexpensive Sushi joint in Andersonville call "Tokyo Marina." Check it out when you get a chance.
I'm the typical American sushi eater. Put it in a roll with avacado and some cream cheese and I'm there. Well, I haven't worked my way up to truly liking uni yet...but douse it with enough teriyaki and I could handle it.
Oh, except salmon skin rolls. What's up with that? I ordered that once and my friends just about killed me.

saki o tsumatai onegaishimasu! (cold saki, PLEASE).
I forgot about the eel! Japanese can do some wonderful things with eel. Walking around the tourist spots in the summer with the grills out, eel on the grills and some kind of shoyu sauce sprayed on the eel - the way many Americans use barbeque sauce. Sigh.

I've been making a lot of sushi lately- there's this stuff made in Eugene by Cafe Yumm called Yumm Sauce, which is a superb tahini based sauce. I spread that on the seaweed, add sushi rice, mango, avacado, carrots, and small tofu chunks. Mmmm, I might just make it again tonight.
Portlanders: Go out and get a can on Yumm sauce, it is fantastic mixed with just about anything. I found it at New Seasons, but it's probably for sale at the co-ops and such.

I'm writing it down.
Also, unagi is the ****.
Edit: word filters suck. This is common knowledge, yes, but still...
