Introductions - Hi from Houston

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, my name is Debby & I live in Houston, TX. Found this forum and have already read some post that offer good advice and support for older riders re-entering the two wheel world.
I was looking for some type of exercise that would fit easily into my schedule and be convenient. I decided on a bike. At 51, it had been sometime since I had been on two wheels. After a brief stint with the first new bike (a Land Rider which I was never comfortable on and was stolen about six months ago) I purchased an Electra – Townie 3S. It was great! Very comfortable, easy to ride and I felt very stable on it. I had it less than a month and it was stolen. I have really missed riding it over the last few weeks. I am now looking to replace it. So, since I am starting over and now looking for my 3rd bike maybe someone has some additional information about a different bike(s) that might fit my needs.
I want to ride not race. I want comfort. I want to sit up straight (not hunched forward). I want to feel stable while riding and have my feet touch the ground when I stop (remember I’m 51 & would really like to make 52). Any suggestions or comments will be appreciated. Please, no rude comments about my lack of securing my bike. I have already had about as many as I can handle and I hope my homeowners insurance doesn’t cancel me.

Hello Debby from Houston. Welcome to the forums. I believe you'll keep returning to this forum for advice & the fun of reading/talking to other cyclists. You of course know there are a gazillion bike shops the the Houston metro area. They all have what you're looking for. Find the ones closest to your home & start that mad search for your new bike. Sounds to me like you know just what you want. A comfort bike. Go get it. Oh & by the way. Get a lock! Sorry, couldn't resist. Hey check back in & let us know what you get.
Hello and welcome!
We're always glad to see the newbies posting here.
As far as bike questions, why not post in the Women's Cycling section? You'll get a lot more exposure and some answers to your questions.
Good luck with your search for the bike.
And get a lock! Sorry, couldn't resist either. :D

There seems to be alot of folks posting here from Texas. So what's the bike scene there like? Bicycling seems to be a popular activity in that state. Is there lots of bike riding going on there?
My uncle lived in Houston back in the '70s during the construction boom. He invited me to come visit him there but I didn't ever go. I can kick myself now!

Hi Debby.
My wife didn't start biking until she was 62, about 4 years ago.
She had never learned as a kid. Like you, she wants to be able to have easy access to the ground with her feet. I have been able to raise her seat a bit at a time until she is almost in a proper position with the amount of bend in her knee when she pedals.
She loves her mtn bike, except it is heavy and slow. It is a "girl's bike" with a step-through frame. She tried a Cannondale R300 road bike, but never got used to it - even after 600 miles. We just bought her a Trek 7300 "hybrid" with the more upright sitting position. She feels it is comfortable, and likes it. It is lighter with thinner tires and larger wheels. It is also a step through fams.
Welcome.
