The bicyclist is an off-duty SF police officer and is hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The attacker was detained, but not arrested.

Yikes. This is further evidence that it is best to avoid ANY confrontation with a driver, because you never know what kind of maniac is behind the wheel. Just keep riding.

I know injuring or killing a cyclist is pretty much a free pass, but damn, it even applies if the cyclist is a cop? Cripes.

Stabbing a police officer (off-duty or otherwise), and not immediately getting the cuffs? There is a diisconnect somewhere in this story, or else the The City is no longer fit for human habitation.

The article says the suspect was detained and that could be with handcuffs. They don't have to arrest him right away.

I actually "like" that part of the story. Same penalty for stabbing Joe Schmoe or a LEO. I wonder if the cyclist was carrying off duty?

Well, I would think that assault with a deadly weapon on a LEO would get a trip to the yard pretty damn quick. I can't conceive of a scenario where sticking a knife into a policeman wouldn't get you dragged off right now, as opposed to detained and released. If he did stick the cop, he should have gotten jammed up right away.

Something's missing here, or cops are cheap in The City.

Channel 2 had a report on this incident on their evening news. They say the suspect was "detained" at gunpoint and they have video of him in handcuffs. No charges were filed as of the evening news, but the car driver is still being interviewed by police. The cop was riding a nice road bike; possibly a Lightspeed.

The article said "detained", not "released".

OK, then - my mistake. Usually, when you get dragged off in cuffs they use the term "arrested", followed shortly by "charged" :)

In cuffs with guns drawn is good enough for me!

The wounded bicyclist is identified as Sgt. John Burke, a 14-year SFPD veteran. He will be hospitalized for at least several days, but is expected to recover. The car driver has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and other crimes.

Lots of people already knew this. That's why there's Caltrain, SamTrans, and BART. So we can work there without having to live there, or just visit once in a while. :)

Note that the road rager is from San Mateo. He just happened to be in San Francisco that day.

Dang that's messed up. He was actually trying to break up a dispute between two motorists.

I guess SM isn't fit for human habitation either!
