Classic & Vintage - Westminster swap meet results?

Been off for a couple of days, checked back about four pages and didn't see anything on the subject. So I figure I'll start the thread:

Anybody here make the Westminster, MD swap meet this past Sunday (8th)? Anybody come up with any interesting purchases?

I got a very nice Campagnolo "no patent" NR rear derailleur for a very fair price, a set a of flat QR lever Campagnolo brakes, and a nice, very inexpensive Regina 6-speed freewhweel very cheap.

I was there, took along 2 bikes to sell in the "bikes for sale" lot. Sold 1. And the only thing I bought was a set of Salsa in-line brake levers. So I left with more money than I went with. It was crowded also.

I was there with 12 bikes. All of them were beautiful, tuned,
and ready to go. If I wasn't willing to give them away, then
I wasn't selling them...

Fuji 1983 Touring, -3 - like new- $190.00
Fuji 1974 Special Road Racer, - near mint - $265.00
Fuji 1983 Supreme,- Near mint - $220.00
Gt Karakoram 1999, - Nice - $240.00
Schwinn 1984 11.8, Near mint - $220.00

The other 7 did not sell.

Bottom line ... 4500 People showed up. Very little, or NO interest in
Vintage bikes. If you weren't giving it away, they weren't buying it. We
may be fast approaching the top of the curve regarding demand.

I had Brandens bike in my spot for over 3 hours and didn't get a nibble.
It was priced at $200.00 Go figure. I guess the MD. DC, VA, and PA
markets aren't what they used to be. I did not have a good day.

Oh well, I now focus on my Motorcycles. :thumb:

Thanks again John for letting my bike sit in your spot. Usually the economy doesn't affect the money people spend on their hobbies, but I think it is starting to. It could mean prices for parts for us vintage guys might come down a little. Jeff

I live near a college town and the students snap up my offerings usually in less than 48 hours. Then again, I don't charge nearly as much as some of the CL posters in the Philly market.

The prices of your bikes seem fair considering their condition. I'm sure you'll have no trouble selling them in the spring.

It was in Westminster Md. They have another one coming up. This is the promoter. And yes Johns bikes were nice too and not overpriced by any means.

Same here. I have been surprised that bikes are selling. I am doing a lot better than last year, maybe part of it is technique and method. But whatever, I am selling similar bikes for more money this year than last year. I thought I would not be able to sell any bikes until spring, but I have been posting them, one or two a week.

And my next two bikes to complete are a 84 Fuji Touring Series IV and a 81 Voyageur 11.8. So I appreciate the price points above. I need that slow boat shipment from Niagara to show up....

you that Larry Black ( I've known him for 25 years) bought a bunch
of my 100 year old pictures, first day issue stamps, and postcards.

I did get to ride Curtis from PA's 1884 Columbia Standard 54", so that was great. It rode much better than my hiwheel.com 48" replica.

OK, it just wasn't my observation at the prices. The economy was definitely keeping people looking for absolute bargains, and enough people were there selling at those kind of prices. I picked up a very nice Schwinn 564 frameset for $10.00 (minus the seatpost, thus the nice price), a few bits and bobbles (six nice used sewup rims, in three matching pairs, for $5.00 - and a couple of used tyres tossed in the deal to sweeten), and the big find of the day was modern - a 2006 Trek Pilot 2.1 frame in just shy of mint condition for $50.00.

The missed and passed stuff were real nice, too: Can't remember the maker's name, but the table behind us had a gorgeous 80's Italian frameset (Pinarello quality) that went for $125.00. Unfortunately, it was a 58. Too small for Poguemahone, too tall for me. I could have walked out of there with about a dozen 126mm wheelsets for about $20.00 apiece, mostly sewup, but a few clincher sets.

Don't feel bad about the vintage stuff not pulling great money. The modern stuff wasn't pulling big bucks, either. Chesterfield, VA is on 1 March - that's one's new so I'm not sure what to expect. Where Westminster has a hard core roadie base, I have a feeling Chesterfield is going to be a little more college transportation oriented.

Oh yeah, does anyone out there have a 'quill' seatpost for a late 80's Schwinn aluminum frame, or have a lead on one? I'll drop a note to the proper sticky, while I'm at it.

I did have a really nice Cannondale Black Lightning which failed to sell, prolly because it was on the large side. In the last hour of the swap, a guy tried to seriously lowball me on it, offering a hundred dollars. I just said no, even when he upped it to $150.

Darn i couldnt go to this one. I insist we could organize a "home made" swap meet at the WOD trail and 28 parking lot w/o any problem 4 or 6 times per year. I agree that people is looking steals, the economy isnt that good right now, but the gvmt wants to give money to the banks and car companies instead of helping to the bottom of the pyramid, that are all of us. If the little man is saved, the little man will start spending and saving money again and the company that is giving job to the little man wont close and so on and so forth. But well, i believe to give money to the banks and car companies will help them to borrow money and produce more cars that for sure will be demanded by the little man that has no money to pay for a loan neither to pay for an old used car (ultraman's political minute)

Don't know guys, there are a bunch of us here at dc metro area with a bunch of stuff at home that probably wont be used ever and its just collecting dust in the garages or basements.

If you're in to riding sewups, this swapmeet is an incredible place to pick up wheels, rims. I've gotten at least one set of wheels in each of the last three years I've attended, only passed on buying this year because I've already got enough wheelsets to do another three bikes (one each: 120, 126, 130), and other than the relaxing enjoyment, it isn't worth building wheels anymore.

Lots of other stuff usually abounds. Last year I got an almost complete set of clean RSX (which ended up on my Mavic neutral support replica) for $60.00 - including brifters.

Hopefully next year I can go back with some serious money, not the couple hundred I've limited myself to these past years.

Interesting sidelight: For decades now, I've quietly put up with the stigma and comments of the "dirty, smelly biker" (motorcycle type), and never really ran into one, no matter how many motorcycle swap meets I've attended. Should I want (believe me, I don't) to ever run across such a person, however, Westminster is the place to be. Once again, I crossed paths with at least three individuals so deficient in the arts of soap and water as to make me gag just by crossing my path. And invariably, said individual looked like some hippie grad student from the University of Vermont.

Guess saving the planet starts with not using soap and water. :p

Good stuff, did you sell that FiR wheelset? The SRG30 rims are great. I'm going to lace the Atlanta's to a set of Mack track hubs I traded with Ultraman for, he got a Pinarello out of it.

I'm still very sore about the 3Rensho, one of those things I will think about for some time to come...

And I sure didn't see any $20 C-Record wheelsets...but I've got 2 sets already anyway so shrug. I probably would just cut the hubs out and ebay em...

I am waiting for our local velodrome swap coming in April.

Does there happen to be a swap meet in middle TN, KY, or northern Al? I don't think I will be driving 12 hours to by a set of wheels, even for $20.

Like you, missing the Rensho upsets me ... Problem was the little Lady was
with me and I wouldn't be able to tell her that I found it at a Yard Sale
for $20.00 :p ;)

OBTW, I bought a brand new Fuji Finest frame from the Vendor across from
me. I then walked around, found everything I needed, and built the bike
on-the-spot. Since I didn't sell the FIR's w/Athena hubs, I built the Fuji
with all Campy. :thumb:

Total investment - $125.00 how cool is that ?
